GMO Debate: Position Statement

Pro

GMO evokes a heat debate between proponents and opponents. Opponents believe that GMO are deadly dangerous, while proponents believe GMO can save the world from famine and other problems. Nevertheless, GMO food brings rather negative effects than positive ones because its effects are unpredictable, uncontrollable and potentially dangerous.

GMO food may trigger the allergy in humans that may lead to serious health problems, while in some cases allergy may lead to lethal outcomes. The danger of such effect of GMO food increases, if people start taking it from the early childhood because children are more vulnerable to allergic reactions and are exposed to higher risks compared to adults.

Furthermore, at the moment, the impact of GMO on ecosystems is unpredictable because it is unclear how GMO may affect the development of the natural ecosystem (Cunningham & Cunningham 167). The natural ecosystem develops on the ground of the natural selection and evolution. GMO intervenes in this natural process and may bring disastrous results to ecosystems.

In addition, the appearance of GMO may trigger the development of new bacteria that have never existed before which may cause the development of new diseases. As a result, the mankind may confront new challenges and threats to the public health that will outweigh all positive effects expected from GMO. New diseases may be extremely dangerous and they would be manmade indirectly.

In such a situation, the position of proponents of GMO is inconsistent because their argument that GMO is the solution to the famine in the world and shortage food is irrelevant to risks and threats that GMO may trigger. Harms of GMO and potential risks outweigh its potential benefits.

Thus, the ban of GMO is the only possible option to prevent the emergence of new problems the mankind will have to confront. Scientists should just stop playing the God.

Contra

GMO food evokes quite controversial arguments for and against its ban. In this regard, the ban of GMO is absolutely unacceptable because GMO is the only chance for the mankind to get sufficient and cheap food for all. Therefore, the GMO should not be banned.

GMO increases the productivity of farming and provides larger opportunities to supply enough food to the global market to divert the threat of famine which persists and increases as the population of the world grows, especially in the Third World countries (Cunningham & Cunningham 195). The increase of productivity helps to supply more food. The larger supply of food increases its availability to all people.

Furthermore, GMO can help to address the problem of poverty and disparity between poor and rich countries. As poor countries will gain opportunity to increase their production of food and to receive enough food to avoid famine, they will be able to become more competitive by focusing on industries that enhance their economic position in the world. Hence, GMO is a way to close gaps between countries.

Also GMO intend to improve plants and food products by bringing in features that they may already posses, like making seeds more resistant to the negative natural environment, or by accelerating the time of their growth. Such changes do not make substantial changes in  properties of products in terms of their impact on human but improve their physical properties because they grow faster and better.

In such a situation, arguments of proponents of GMO ban are questionable and irrelevant. Their assumption that GMO may be dangerous for humans and environment grounds on unproved fears, whereas GMO food is tested before introduced in the market and modifications made at the genetic level focus on improvements of food products mainly without changing them much.

Thus, GMO should not be banned. Otherwise, the mankind will face the problem of famine and the shortage of food.
