Cybersecurity in the USA | Discussion

It is no question that the majority of authoritative and influential organizations have once faced slight or massive cyber-attack. One of such mistreatment happened in March 2016 between the USA and Russia. The US officials found out a bunch of malware in some operating systems in US nuclear, water, energy, and critical manufacturing sector tracked to Russian Federation.

However, not only malware was the cyber-threat to American infrastructure, but the overall intrusion campaign from Russian cyber actors, who mapped out the detailed plan on approaching and hacking “small commercial facilities’ networks where they staged malware, conducted spear phishing and gained remote access into energy sector networks” (Borger, 2018).

The degree of cyber-attack was not severe, though FBI and the US officials drew on different organizations to check their cybersecurity after such a threat. Russian cyber actors caused reconnaissance, received some data about industrial control systems and gave the overall lag in the network. The energy sector is one of the powerful in the USA so that Russian hackers could have had a significant benefit from it: “the motive of the attack was initially surveillance, to gather information on computer management systems in the US energy grid” (Borger, 2018).

As a result, the American government had decided to put a wide array of sanctions against Russian both in 2016 and 2018. Russian cyber campaign is actively and deliberately targeting the US sectors, and Donald Trump has launched various sanctions in 2018, which help to toughen and enhance cybersecurity in those sectors, and others.

The cyber-attack might have been avoided if the US government strengthened their cybersecurity from the very beginning, preventing potential threats, especially from the counter-partners. It is no brand-new phenomenon that the USA and Russia have always had a rough relationship. Hence, it would be more intelligent and safe to check security in such powerful and wealthy sectors across the globe.
