Health Reform: The Patient Protection & Affordance Care Act | Discussion

The Patient Protection and Affordance Care Act (ACA) became a United States federal statute, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010. Till the moment it is considered to represent the American healthcare system’s most significant and meaningful regulatory overhaul after the passage of the Medicaid and Medicare. (Oberlander 2010). Certainly this innovation caused a lot of controversies due to the evident presence of both positive and negative aspects. The greatest benefit of the ACA is considered to be its ability to slow down the increase of health care costs. This is done with the help of securing insurance for millions and making preventive care free. In other words, individuals have the opportunity to receive timely preventive care support and thus they won’t have to spend a lot for emergency room services afterwards. The cost of health care services increased 1.2 % in 2016. This figure is much lower in comparison to 4 % increase in 2004. With the help of it 10 essential health benefits are covered, including addiction, chronic diseases, mental health problems. These are the most often causes for the patients to contact the emergency rooms. Unfortunately along with this positive change, brought by the Patient Protection and Affordance Care Act, there are also negative economic outcomes. Around three to five million people lost their employment-based health insurance. Top managers of many businesses did not want to pay penalties. Their employees started to buy insurance plans on the exchanges. For the small businesses they managed to obtain better plans with the help of the state –run exchanges. In addition a lot of insurance companies were forced to cancel some of their plans, due to the fact they were not able to cover the mentioned ten essential benefits of the ACA. There seems to be long way to go before the ACA would really bring more positive changes in the economic sphere.
