Alcoholism Addiction Essay

Abstract

This paper explores an issue about alcoholism and how it affects human health and behavior. “Alcoholism an addictive behavior” is actual question because alcohol is the most used addictive substance in the USA. According to the statistics in 2014, 16.3 million adults older 18 years, were addictive to alcohol. Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a pattern to use alcohol more than 7 drinks per week. If the person uses alcohol often than 3 days per week and more than 7 drinks, the person can become addicted to alcohol. Dependents on alcohol can be determined if a person has craving – wishing a drink, withdrawal symptoms, tolerance – drinks more forget the same effect, and desire constantly use alcohol. This paper describes symptoms, causes, effects and treatment of alcoholism.

Introduction

In today’s society the topic about alcoholism is one of the hottest issues that require a lot of research and attention. Alcoholism addiction is becoming an increasing problem that negatively affects human health, relations, lifestyle, and development. Annually, countries spend large sums of money to stop the problem of alcoholism and reduce its consequences on society. Over the last few decades researchers have studied symptoms, causes, effects and treatment of alcoholism providing various new theories and methods of prevention. It is obvious that this problem is difficult to combat, but humanity must realize all possible alcoholism dangers and damages to society as a whole. Alcoholism problem is too global to ignore.

Addiction is a psychological desire need regularly have something for use. It is can be habit-forming substance heroin, nicotine, alcohol. Criteria of addiction: the person addicted if 3 criteria from the least present during the year: needs increase amount of substance, social or occupational acting are given or decreased using a substance, withdrawal syndrome after quite use a substance, a lot of time spends in activities to get a substance driving long distance, appointments with a doctor.

Alcohol is a dangerous and toxic drug, which causes many physical and cognitive consequences, and a variety of social, economic, and legal problems. It is a key symptom for an alcohol problem – if the person continues to drink in spite of all the problem and consequences it causes (Buddy, 2016). Alcohol is a psychoactive beverage which consists of a substantial amount of ethanol (ethyl alcohol). Researchers have found that it is a psychoactive substance that contains in many alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and others. It negatively affects central nervous system (CNS) that leads to psychological and physiological addiction. Alcohol is so-called a central nervous system depressant which causes different effects on the body and mind.

Alcohols effect on the body

Alcohol consumption is an integral part of daily life in many societies (Spanager, 2009). Many people become vulnerable to alcoholism addiction because of the high levels of stress and mental disorders, anxiety or depression, low sense of personality or self worse. Alcohol helps people to comfort the comfortless, forget about troubles, get over losses, feel pleasure and satisfaction, and relax as well. When people drink alcohol it is absorbed into their blood and affects almost every part of human organism. Alcohol damages human heart, liver, and lungs (infections like tuberculosis), negatively effects the brain, causes hallucinations, problems with coordination and speech, thins bones in the body and ruins skeleton system, negatively effects stomach, leads to sexual dysfunctions, infertility and birth dysfunctions, and finally, causes physical dependence. When people use alcohol for a long period of time, it puts their health at serious risk. Some people drink alcohol well and healthy, others overuse it, which can result in deadly accidents, alcohol abuse and alcoholism (Peele, 2010). This is why people use alcohols despite the fact to addiction to it.

Addicted people have thought about alcohol, socialize about their problem while drinking and overuse it, adjusting to a new environment, acceptance reality. There are genetic, social, psychological, and environmental factors of drinking alcohol and its affect son human body and behavior. Often alcoholism causes of heritage if a member of a family were addicted (a family history where the risk of alcohol use is higher for those who have relatives with alcohol problems and alcohol overuse). Alcoholics have a withdrawal symptom that begins after two hours from previous drink usage. They include poor concentration, the feelings of worry and anxiety, insomnia. On the whole, alcoholism often causes severe social consequences on individual’s life. Statistics shows that “alcoholism is associated with 25% of all general hospital admissions, and alcohol abuse and dependence cause an estimated 100,000 deaths annually” (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2005).

Treatment 

Treatment can be very successful if a person understands his or her addictiveness. There can be used drugs, psychotherapy with a psychologist, or alcoholics anonymous (organizations where addicted people have conversation about alcohol and how it is effect o them). Today, psychologists and medical experts provide a wide variety of treatment methods, options, and different therapies that help to stop the problem and learn how to develop a long lasting effect and alcohol free lifestyle.

Conclusion

Alcohol is a drug of option associated with withdrawal symptom. It leads to addiction when body gets to use it and needs more for the same effect of pleasure and relax. It is a dangerous and toxic drug that causes a variety of problems that negative effects individual’s health, body, mind, relations and lifestyle. Alcoholism problem is too global to ignore. Thus, humanity must realize all possible alcoholism dangers and damages to society as a whole.  Today, there are many associations, therapists, and medical experts who are ready to help, so there is no need to do it on your own. People should care about their health, start living healthier life and develop a drug-free society.
