Proper Nutrition or Fast Food – What to Choose and What Consequences may be From Overeating Junk Food

Many people have long used food as one of the most important means to promote health. Ancient Greek sages argued that people are the essence of what they eat for many reasons.  For instance, Seneca wrote that moderate nutrition improves mental ability. Nowadays, modern science has achieved some successes in the study of nutritional issues. It is a well-known fact that it is based on food proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. The problem of proper nutrition is currently the most urgent, and it is confirmed by the results of many studies. Considering the position that human health is directly dependent on the food that an individual consumes, it can be stated that high-calorie and fatty foods are the most dangerous enemies of human health. A person can eat fast food and do not even suspect that such a behavior is negatively influencing his/her health. In such a way, the impact of fast food on human health has been studied many years ago, but buyers still cannot refuse harmful and dangerous food. Thus, regular snacks in fast foods can become not only the cause of weight gain and the appearance of fat deposits, but also affect the development of depression and depressed states.

Currently, science and the media are actively discussing the problem of various kinds of “addictions”, such as smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction, but, unfortunately, the problem of such a form of dependence as food is rarely discussed (Spurlock, 2004). Snacking “in a hurry,” people, unfortunately, do not think about the issues that non-natural food is in several times cheaper than ordinary products, although the taste is almost the same with the natural products.

In addition, there exists one more equally important problem. Often people think that “artificial food” consists of only hamburgers and cheeseburgers, while hot soups and main dishes in fast food restaurants are not at all harmful food. However, this position regarding different dishes in fast food restaurants is wrong. To support this fact, it should also be noted that fast food contains a huge amount of food preservatives and additives, dyes, emulsifiers, thickeners, sealants and flavor enhancers. In many ways, the solution of these problems would be easier to solve if people become more knowledgeable about issues related to various aspects of rational and high-quality nutrition.

Providing appropriate reasons to support a position that fast food is bad for human health, it is possible to state that one of the most important differences in the composition of fast food and regular food, which people used to cook at home, is the difference between fats. For instance, butter and natural meat contain natural fat, which in certain doses is necessary for the functioning of human body. However, in the preparation of different types of foods, fast food restaurants use margarine, containing a large number of trans-isomers of fatty acids, which are the result of increased risk of diabetes, reduced immunity, as well as overweight.

Exploring the negative impact of fast food on human health, it can be said that with daily use of fast food, almost all organs and systems of the body are affected. Fast food is a huge burden on the digestive system, kidneys and liver. In order for fast food to affect human health, it is enough to use it more often than a couple of times a week. Some students and schoolchildren eat fast food daily. According to the information presented in the film “Super Size Me”, such an approach provokes obesity due to fast food (Spurlock, 2004).

It is also important to remember that in the process of cooking different dishes in fast food restaurants, there are often used different trans fats. These fats cannot be found in the refrigerators of housewives, and they represent a particular danger. They are used in industry and are low cost products. The most dangerous are trans-isomers acids. Such fats have a twisted structure, which allows them to integrate into human molecules and disrupt their composition. Moreover, scientists have proved that trans fats are the cause of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Fast food can cause breast cancer and infertility. They negatively affect the vessels and lead to atherosclerosis. Moreover, various tumors and neoplasms may appear because of them. A very little amount of people think about those components which are the basis of fast food dishes, as well as exploring low cost of different dishes in the fast food restaurants, hoping for a special cooking technology that does not exist.

Fast food is very calorie diet due to the high content of fats and sugar. At first glance, a hamburger may seem flavorless, although in fact it contains a high percentage of fat. Overweight is inevitable with daily use of fast food. The average calorie meal at McDonalds is 1500- 2000 calories. This is almost the daily rate of calories for a person who does not play sports. Despite this, a person feels hunger after a very short time, and wants to have a snack repeatedly. A large number of empty calories leads to obesity and problems of the digestive system. Fatty fast food has a negative effect on the liver and pancreas. The fast food calorie content is very high and the usual sandwich cooked at home contains almost three times less fat, even though it may contain oil.

In order for fast food to be so tasty, a variety of food additives are used in the process of its preparation. Manufacturers do not hide this, and buyers do not even suspect how this consumption of food can end. Chemical elements are deposited in the cells of the body, and can become provocateurs of cancer. Some people have weakened immune systems and allergies. It becomes obvious that nutritional supplements negatively affect all internal organs. Food preservatives can even affect a person’s appearance in the form of skin problems. However, fast food is so tasty owing to various food additives, while eating fast food is very high all over the world, and fast food has gained such a great popularity with the help of its chemical composition.

In attempts to show that fast food have some positive features, it can be said that eating fast food is convenient, and besides, tasty because, as it was previously mentioned, the composition of simple dishes contain flavorings. However, fast food recipes have nothing to do with cooking – this is the food industry and modern technology, so there is practically nothing natural in this food. In addition, fast food can be as addictive as alcohol or nicotine. The high content of fat and sugar leads to gradual addiction. Natural and healthy food is no longer giving a pleasure to people, and many fast food visitors cannot refuse hamburgers and other dishes, even realizing the harm they can cause to the body. For some people, eating in fast food restaurants becomes a daily routine (Spurlock, 2004). Subconsciously, a person realizes that he eats food that is completely useless, but still cannot refuse it. As a result, the state of health is only getting worse.

In conclusion, food affects people much more than it seems at first glance. With its help, an individual can lose weight, build muscle mass, improve appearance, in a case of choosing the right diet. However, when a person eats unhealthy food, the bad consequences will not take long to wait and the food affects not only the physical condition, but also the psychological state. Thus, with this research we confirmed the hypothesis that there is a direct connection between human health and the use of fast food. This food really negatively affects the body. Harm of fast food is primarily associated with a high content of fat, salt, sugar, high energy value; low fiber content; lack of essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. It is necessary to eat as little as possible such food, as it leads to the development of such diseases as heart attack, diabetes, exacerbation of gastritis, obesity, and many others. Failure of the next portion of fast food will help preserve an individual’s physical and mental health.
