Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden; or Life in the Woods” Book Review

Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, thinker, and naturalist. At the same time, he was an initiator of such a phenomenon as green anarchism. In an attempt to oppose his thoughts to those of the rest of the world, he wrote Walden; or Life in the Woods trying to show that the world was beautiful without any technology and civilization. Thus, the main task of the given assignment is to show where the writer used “nature detail” in the most evident way in order to prove his beliefs.

To begin, the book was written because the author wanted to show that it was possible to live well outside the society; nature was considered to be the only environment necessary for successful existing of people. Here, the writer described his own experience of living in nature where privacy, self-sufficiency, and contemplation were the most important things.

As a result, the whole book is full of the evidence, but some of them are more worthwhile than others. Firstly, the “nature detail” is noticeable when Henry tells us about the sounds he heard. The trickling water, the tweeting birds, and even the sounds of travelers’ wagons make us feel that we are a part of the world that is far from the developed world (Walden; or Life in the Woods 84). Secondly, Thoreau creates the feeling that he himself and all the readers are a part of Nature in the chapter named Baker Farm. Here, the author describes his feelings while he is growing some plants (150-51). As for me, the given situation is the best way to show that all the people are a part of nature because all of us can participate in its development. Finally, a perfect feeling of being a piece of Nature can be found when the author describes his life in a winter period. It is the time when he can travel a lot and enjoy the flora and fauna of the winter world (203-09).

To conclude, it is possible to say that the given book is a must-read for everyone who is tired of the city life. Henry David Thoreau shows us that it is possible to benefit from being the “nature detail”.
