Features of the Spanish Conquest of America

The conquest of America by Spaniards was the turning point not only in the history of Spain but also in the world history as well. At the same time, the colonization of America brought considerable changes to the native population of America and Spain as well. The conquest made Spain the largest empire in the world for the time being, although the expansion brought devastation and physical elimination of a large part of the native population. Nevertheless, Spanish conquest also involves scientific exploration of America and syncretism which contributed to the integration of traditional Spanish culture and beliefs and those of the native population of America.

The conquest was apparently one of the main goals of Spanish as they did not just settled in America but also established their administration and attempted to integrate closely new colonies into the Spanish Empire. The conquest was the major driver of Spanish colonialism and encouraged many Spaniards to undertake risky journeys to the New World, where they faced numerous risks and was never certain that they reach the continents successfully and survive their journey. The New World was also full of dangers but the strife for gold and wealth encouraged many Spaniards to undertake those risks and travel to the New World. At the same time, Spanish did not just conquest but also explored America, whereas conquistadors just followed the exploration performed by Spanish, who explored America and had scientific interest rather than material one.

Syncretism was a noteworthy trend in the Spanish expansion and settlement in America. Spaniards did not only conquer the native population of America but also integrated some elements of the local culture. However, Spaniards mainly attempted to impose their culture and worldview on the native population to assimilate and ‘civilize’ them. At this point, Spanish churches of the colonial period are particularly noteworthy, such as the church in Nave, San Jose, Old Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico (1760-1846).

Thus, Spanish conquest involved the colonization, exploration and cultural integration of Spanish and local cultures.
