How Religion Functions in Community Essay

Religion, as happened historically, has a national significance in the United States. Moreover, especially a specific course of history caused the number of members of one or another religion in the country. Thus, we are going to discuss the ways how religion functions in community.

As Bruhn (2005) stated, the U.S. is not a country of one faith. As stated in the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, there is no the state religion in the U. S., so the country guarantees freedom of religion to its citizens. In such a way, today in the United States can be found virtually all variations of religions and the people who practice them. But it goes without saying that Christianity occupies the first place among other religions.

Taking into account the fact that the U.S. was inhabited by immigrants, there is a necessity to mention that non-Christian immigrants faced many difficulties in this new country. On the one hand, people were forced to live in new society with its new traditions, principles and religion, but on the other hand, immigrants received an opportunity to change their life, and their main task was to plunge into the issue of religion with additional depth and realize its influence on human life for the purpose to make the right choice because those people remained behind a continent torn by sectarian strife, and they had nothing to do than to practice of living new life.

Observing the ways how religion functions in community, we need to note that religion is one of the most important ways which allows Americans to take an active part in the life of their community and society as a whole. Americans donate more time and money to religious organizations and societies than to all other voluntary associations unitedly. Moreover, the American version of the privatization of religion, when some public functions are recognized in the frames of religion, can be perfectly connected with religious pluralism characteristic of America since colonial times, which has become even more pronounced and widespread. To add, religion has an influence even on human health, including both emotional and mental condition of the person and physical state of organism. For instance, prayers are beneficial to the human body because vibrations of different words and sounds in prayers may positively influence on human health. In a case of high blood pressure and diabetes, a few minutes of praying down the level of cholesterol in the blood, and also normalize metabolism.

In conclusion, we have discussed how religion functions in community, and explained that belonging to the Church gives people a sense of belonging to the community, its social and moral problems. People understand their commitment to the church as willingness to devote their time, money and mental strength to the community, which is the church, and to promote the achievement of its other goals.
