Environmental Science: How to Restore a Rainforest

The environmental issue identified in the island of Borneo is deforestation. High rate of deforestation leads to negative impact on the natural environment, including flora and fauna. In other words, cutting of forests in Borneo leads to the extinction of a large number of species, relocation of wildlife animals, and, finally, it contributes to global warming. In early 20th century,  Borneo was over 75% forested, but, unfortunately, large scale of forests were found cut. As a result, hundreds of orangutans lost their home. Besides, diverse communities of people living in this region suffered from this environmental problem.

Actually, the grass-roots tools were used to improve the conservation and allow the regrowth of the rainforest. The biologist Willie Smits suggests that it is important to re-grow clear cut rainforest in Borneo in order to save local orangutans and restore the fragile ecosystems. People should make a difference using new technologies and strategies in addressing the emergent environmental concern. The creation of the orangutan rehabilitation centre allowed to resolve the problem of extinction of species, while restoration of large tracts of rainforest in the area of Borneo was combined with bringing new jobs  to the local people. This fact means that the proper conditions should be provided for regrowing the rainforest.

In fact, Smits believes that it is really important to engage the local people in the planning and implementing of restoring the forest in Borneo. This conservation program should be supported by local people through integration practices.  It is critical to “adjust it to the local, cultural values”, according to the biologist (Smith). The local people should participate in reforestation in order to resolve the environmental problem by joint actions, save the lives of hundreds of orangutans and get jobs. His personal experience shows that it is possible to combat deforestation and fire and assist wildlife through conversion of orangutan habitat to oil palm plantations.
