IT Management – Business Systems Planning Essay

Business systems planning plays an extremely important part in the development of the contemporary business, especially if the business involves the use of information technologies. Taking into consideration the current progress and integration of IT into the contemporary business, the application of business systems planning becomes crucial for many organizations. In such a way, business systems planning can help organization to define, analyze and plan information systems within organizations. This is why they contribute to the development of effective information systems, which maximize the effectiveness of the organizational performance.

In fact, business systems planning involves defining, analyzing and designing information systems respectively to needs of businesses, their environment and operations. In such a way, business systems planning helps organization to design their information systems respectively to their specific needs (Peters, 2008). Today, organizations have access to diverse information technologies. Therefore, they often face a problem of how to make the available information technologies working effectively to enhance the organizational performance. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that often organizations face the problem with the adequate and effective implementation of information technologies and information systems. Many organizations fail to use the full potential of information technologies they have at hand. Some organizations introduce new information technologies expecting to enhance the performance of their employees and to maximize the effectiveness of the organizational performance. However, they may fail to introduce the new information technologies successfully just because they do not match their organizational design. In such a situation, organizations may fail to benefit from the introduction of information technologies, which are very prospective and have a huge potential.

In this regard, business systems planning can be very helpful because it allows organizations to define, analyze and design their information system effectively and respectively to their needs and wants (Behzad, 2003). In fact, business systems planning allows identifying current needs of the organization and information technologies that can meet those needs. Then organizations can define how to apply those technologies in their organizational structure and design. As they start designing their information systems, they use design developed on the ground of business systems planning. As a result, organizations come up with effective information systems that uncover the full potential of information systems used by organizations.

At the same time, IT managers should be aware of the fact that business systems planning help to implement information technologies effectively but they cannot develop new technologies for organizations (Tanenbaum, 2003). Instead, they offer an opportunity for organizations to use the full potential of information technologies available to them at the moment. In this regard, managers should use business systems planning to enhance the effectiveness of using available technologies. Business systems planning includes three key elements, including defining, analyzing and designing information systems on the ground of available information technologies.

In such a way, business systems planning helps companies to reach the strategic competitive advantage due to the efficient use of available information technologies (Viardot, 2001). Business systems planning contributes to the efficient use of information technologies based on the accurate planning respectively to organizational needs and specificities.

Thus, the introduction of business systems planning is an efficient approach to the implementation of new information systems in the organizational performance. Business systems planning help to increase the effectiveness of using information technologies and provide companies with a competitive advantage.
