Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” Book Review

When the father of Jane Austin brought the manuscript of his daughter to a publishing company, they refused to consider it. However, when she rewrote it fourteen years later, Pride and Prejudice became her most popular and highly appreciated novel. The novel centers on several crucial themes, one of them is the relations between individual and society. The author describes the world, where there is hardly place for something personal, as society is actively involved into the private lives of all individual members of it. As a result characters of the story are not able to find the important answers for the questions about their true selves and people around them. This is reflected in the famous phrase by Mr. Bingley “People themselves alter so much, that there is something new to be observed in them for ever.” (Austin 2014). The author lets the readers feel her critical perception of this significant impact, which public opinion seems to have upon individual choices and behaviors. At the same time Austin does not deny that unique role of the society in building and promoting of virtue, which is important for each member of this society. On the one hand people need their personal space and on the other hand all individuals are social beings and they are not able to exist without society and without its impacts. All individuals are too communicate and cooperate with each other within the frames of this society, at the same time it is utterly difficult to have clear understanding about other members of the society for everybody. The author devotes a lot of attention towards discussing of the concepts of value. She underlined the meaning of reason for guiding the human desires and appetites. This is possible only under the condition of self-awareness, as nobody is able to develop his virtue without knowing about himself. Finally Austin builds a chain from happiness to self-awareness through virtue.
