Karst Topography & Cave Structures Essay

The article More Than Meets the Eye by John Kinnear focuses on difficulties of exploring karst topography and cave structures. The author of the article was looking for the discovery of a new karst topographic area but in actuality found a complicated cave structure. In such a way, the author uncovers how unexpectedly researchers may look for certain samples but discover others. At the same time, this story reveals the diversity and complexity of geological structures which are more complicated than they may seem to be for explorers.

John Kinnear refers to his experience of the exploration of Sentry Mountain area in search of the new, undiscovered karst topographic structure. At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that John Kinnear has started his exploration of the area on the ground of previous studies and explorations. For example, he refers to McKenzie as the first person who told him about the existence of karst topographic structure in Sentry Mountain area. The author collected more data on the issue and prepared carefully for his research. This reference to previous researchers and studies performed in the past are very important because they reveal the correlation between the past and present exploration and research activities. This fact is very important in terms of understanding of geological explorations and studies because one can hardly conduct the study or exploration of the area spontaneously and make some noteworthy discoveries. Such blindfolded exploration are ineffective and basically contradict to scientific principles because they are not grounded on facts and information grounded on the objective data. The information collected by previous studies can help to find ways for new studies and explorations performed by geologists. In this regard, the case of John Kinnear is particularly noteworthy because the researcher have managed to explore the area and to make new discoveries in search of the unstudied karst topographic structure.

Furthermore, the author provides the detailed description of the cave with the  use of speleological terms and the use of the professional language which reveals how thoroughly the author attempts to map the cave. The accuracy is pivotal for geological studies, especially in case of speleological studies because caves are very complex structures which are dangerous for explorers. This is why the accuracy of the description is not just the matter of scientific accuracy or validity of information but it is also the matter of survival of speleologists, who are trying to explore caves and use the information available from various sources, including articles like the one published by John Kinnear.

The accuracy of the description of the area reveals the detailed study of the cave and its geological structure by the researcher and his detailed analysis of past studies. The researcher does not simply conveys his experience of the past caves but also reveals how important it is to record one’s findings with the high degree of accuracy to make the cave ‘explorable’ for new explorers. The accurate information allows repeating the way of the first explorer, who have studied the cave. At the same time, such accuracy contributes to the overall validity of the study because the scientifically valid study is the study that may be reconstructed and repeated by other researchers on the condition of the reconstruction of identical conditions and perform the accurate exploration of the area. In such a way, the exploration of the cave performed by John Kinnear was a valuable experience for new explorer, who would like to continue his exploration and dig deeper into Sentry Mountain.

At the same time, by the end of the article, the author remarks that the explorer, who dedicated a lot of time to the exploration of the karst topography, had discovered the deepest cave in Canada. Therefore, the irony is that the search of the karst topography brought the explorer to a new and even greater discovery. At first, this remark is nothing more than an attempt of the author to make the article more interesting and attractive to the reader. However, in actuality, this remark reveals the unpredictable outcome of explorations in the field of geology. One may dedicate his or her life to the exploration of one item but ultimately bring other researchers to the discovery of absolutely different items of geologic structures. In such a way, the author uncovers the true exploration which is unexpected and unpredictable because it focuses on the exploration of the new areas to make discoveries one can never even expect. Such discoveries are probably the most fascinating and reveal the other side of the scientific exploration which is rather emotional than scientific. The author indicates to the emotional satisfaction and excitation of the researcher, who discovers what he/she has not even expected to discover. In such a way, the author shows that the exploration may be emotionally fascinating and engaging.

Thus, the development of geological explorations may lead to unexpected outcomes as John Kinnear shows in his article More Than Meets the Eye, but also the article reveals the importance of previous studies which show the way for new explorations and the importance of accuracy in recording information collected by the researcher. In such a way, the exploration of new areas and geologic structures can bring unexpected results and discoveries that have a considerable impact not only on science but also on the emotional condition of the explorer.
