QUESTION 1: SHOULD THE PART-TIME FACULTY BE INCLUDED IN THE FULL-TIME FACULTY BARGAINING UNIT?

The part-time faculty should be included in the full-time faculty bargaining unit because they should be  guaranteed equal treatment with full-time faculty. Both part-time faculty and full-time faculty are professionals as they provide specialized services according to their qualification. If part-time faculty want to bargain collectively, they should be provided with this opportunity. It should be determined if the part-time faculty are to become part of the full-time faculty bargaining unit or if they are to become part of a separate unit. It is necessary to take into consideration the fact that the full-time faculty and the part-time faculty are positioned as colleagues with equal rights on the campus. Part-time faculty teach only one or two courses a term and get payment for each class, while full-time faculty teach more courses and get higher wages. However, both the part-time and full-time faculty should have the same qualifications to deliver high quality education to students.

QUESTION 2: SHOULD THE PART-TIME COACHES BE INCLUDED IN THE FULL-TIME FACULTY BARGAINING UNIT?

The part-time coaches should not be included in the full-time faculty bargaining unit because they are do not have the same qualifications as the full-time faculty. Part-time coaches are responsible for coaching teams in different kinds of sports on a seasonal basis. They work less than the full-time faculty. Their primary qualifications are knowledge of sport and coaching experience. This fact means that part-time coaches do not serve the roles of faculty members. Besides, it is not required that students participate in sports. They do not receive credit for their participating in sports. Hence, the duties and responsibilities of part-time coaches differ from those of the full-time faculty members. It is not necessary to include the part-time coaches in the full-time faculty bargaining unit as coaches are do not have the responsibilities of the full-time faculty members. Part-time coaches should not be included in the bargaining unit based on the unit definition (Cain, 2017).
