Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy in Old Age Patients More Than 65 Years Old

  1. Background
  2. Epidemiology of obesity

In actuality, the problem of obesity affects a large part of the population of the US with obese people comprising about 25% of the total population of the US (). Obesity is extremely dangerous for patients’ health because it leads to the development of diverse health problems, including chronic diseases. Elderly patients are particularly vulnerable to the negative impact of obesity because obesity aggravates their physical conditions and leads to numerous complications of chronic diseases, which they acquire by the age of 65 and older.

  1. Treatment of obesity with emphasis on LSG

Today, there are different methods of treatment of obesity, among which the change of the lifestyle with the focus on physical activities and food habits with the shift to the healthy food consumption are the most popular. However, such methods can help on the early stages of the development of obesity. At later stages, especially among the elderly population, more efficient methods of treatment are needed, such as Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy which involves the surgery that reduces the stomach to 25% of its original size reducing the feeling of hunger and consumption of food to the level natural for people.

  1. Rationale for the study

The current study will focus on the research of the impact of Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on elderly patients and safety issues since elderly patients are traditionally in the risk group as they are vulnerable to serious health problems compared to younger patients and they may face problems during the surgery as well as during the rehabilitation after the surgery.

  1. Methods
  2. Literature sources

The study will focus on the literature review and analysis of available studies dedicated to the problem of conducting laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in elderly patients and possible complications as well as specificities of the surgery and rehabilitation of patients. The study of existing researches will help to identify possible challenges, which health care professionals should come prepared to before the surgery.

  1. Key words

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, elderly patients, surgery, rehabilitation, complications.

  1. Article selection criteria

Articles used in the course of the study will be selected on the ground of the date, when the study was conducted. The studies should be within the five-seven time limit from now. In other words, the current research will focus on studies conducted after 2006. Furthermore, all the articles should be published in peer-reviewed journals.

  1. Data Synthesis:

The treatments will be assessed on the ground of the lack of negative side-effects and complications of patients and the speed of the recovery of patients.

The outcomes will be assessed on the ground of the physical health assessment of patients shortly after the surgery (one week), a month and a year after the surgery.

Patients may be divided into subgroups depending on their BMI and probably gender, if the studies reveal any significant differences between male and female elderly patients, who undergo laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

  1. Implications of the project

The study will have a considerable impact on the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy conducted in elderly patients. Today, health care professionals may doubt whether elderly patients at the age of 65 and above should undergo the surgery, while the study will provide them with detailed information on such surgeries, possible challenges, complications and effective methods of rehabilitation of patients.
