Leadership is all about guiding people, forecasting, motivation, inspiration, and organizational influence. In general, leadership is all about art that requires creativity, vision, an ability to inspire and motivate others, trust and confidence. When it comes to the keys to effective managing leadership development at certain levels, each type of management requires a set of specific steps, strategies and techniques to succeed in leadership. A first-line supervisor is responsible for all the tasks and the processes at the lowest level, which may include interviewing potential candidates and employees, staff training, performance appraisals, meetings, etc.; they are responsible for daily activities, productivity, and employees’ performance. Thus, a first-line supervisor often uses autocratic leadership to increase employees’ obedience and order within the company. In order to succeed in leadership, first-line supervisors should maintain balance, harmonize management demands, and encourage teamwork. A middle manager often uses participative type of leadership that allows them to make the right decisions, direct and control employees, and encourage people’s productivity and job satisfaction. In order to succeed in leadership, middle managers require some knowledge and experience in planning, management, conflict solving, teambuilding, meetings, etc. Middle managers develop a ground for senior managers who should possess excellent organizational management skills in strategic planning, strategic leadership, organizational planning and cultural leadership. They set strategies and goals for the organization, manage day-to-day operations, and monitor strategic plans. Finally, the President/CEO is responsible for developing the long-term vision, risk taking, and planning transitions to the next stage of growth in business. In order to succeed, the CEO should be able to forecast and predict possible outcomes, examine weak and strong sides, inspire, motivate and organize his people to achieve the desired results and gain profits.

Compare and contrast strategic leadership and operational leadership, explaining which type of leadership is essential for the long-range survival and growth of an entrepreneurial organization and why.

As known, operational leaders and strategic leaders significantly differ with their approaches, knowledge, abilities, and leadership philosophies. Operational leaders search for innovative tools, analyze and think “out-of-box”, while strategic leaders always inspire and lead their people to achieve results and enhance drive for the long-term performance at all levels of the organization.  In modern business environment, many entrepreneurial organizations practice strategic leadership, which helps them to determine the overall vision and mission of the organization, implement and evaluate strategies to achieve the desired goals, and effectively develop steps to address the employees’ and the clients’ needs. Some entrepreneurial organizations apply for operational leadership, which helps to ensure the operational processes, monitor performance, address the possible weaknesses and risks, and increase the employees’ awareness about business tasks and future goals.  But if we need to choose which types of leadership is essential for the long-range survival and growth of an entrepreneurial organization, I consider that strategic leadership can become more effective and successful type of leadership for the organizational growth and development. Evidence indicates that “entrepreneurial success depends on the ability to think strategically, have a clear strategic vision, and achieve results quickly” (Price, 2011). In comparison with operational leadership that focuses on operational performance, strong internal partnership, and organizational processes, strategic leadership focuses on the overall vision and mission of the organization and helps to develop strategies and steps to achieve the organizational goals. Strategic leadership is essential for the long-range survival and growth of an entrepreneurial organization as it enhances a strategic focus and strategic intent based on the organizational vision. For the entrepreneurial organization, “success depends on the ability to think strategically and achieve results quickly” (Price, 2011).

Organizational future profits, the employees job satisfaction, corporate culture, relationships etc. significantly depend on the leadership style or a combination of styles the leaders apply to guide, lead, and inspire their followers. As known, effective leaders “drive innovation, and they encourage their people to think strategically and creatively, which also reaching for new limits” (Lazzari, 2018). Most leaders change their leadership styles and progress through various types of leadership through their business career (Becker, 2018). Strategic and democratic leadership styles are among common styles of leadership that leaders of larger companies use to move the business in a positive direction, enhance long-term commitment, gain higher profits, and direct their followers. Many leaders of larger companies often use democratic leadership style, which helps to share responsibilities and decision making within the organization. In comparison with autocratic leadership style that is characterized with control, aggressiveness, and maximum demands, democratic leadership helps leaders to support positive work environment, encourage employees leadership roles, enhance motivation, empowerment, job satisfaction, and good performance, which it its turn contribute to  creativity and develop perspectives for employees. Evidence indicates that for the large companies, democratic leadership style is very effective as it allows leaders to listen to employees’ ideas/solutions, and determine insufficiencies, weaknesses, and possible risks. In general, due to the democratic leadership style, leaders benefit through the flow of the ideas, concepts, business strategies, creative solutions, and as a result can achieve the long-lasting success and business stability. Studies after studies showed that democratic leadership is considered one of the most effective leadership styles because “it allows lower level employees to exercise authority they’ll need to use wisely in future positions they might hold” (Becker, 2018).
