Leadership Position Essay Example

Effective leadership is one of key factors of success for different kinds of ventures, organizations and companies. In simple words leadership can be described as the ability to guide people. In reality leadership consists of a lot of important components, which make a good leader and make other people in his surrounding grow and develop. There is no doubt that leadership is one of the most important components in the organizational structure. A leader gives right direction to all members of the organization and defines primary goals and local goals. Leadership always assumes responsibility and ability to organize and direct people. Effective  leaders should possess ability to be several steps ahead and see the whole picture in any situations. There are different kinds of leadership and each kind presents different approach to dealing with people. Leadership can be formal or informal, but in reality influence is not measured by the official position of a leader, but rather by the impact he can have on people.  In the situation when a leader does not have formal power, he can turn to transactional leadership to make people follow him. Transactional leadership can be effective only during short period of time and should be used only as temporary mean. Transformational leadership is another approach to leadership position. Leaders of this type care about growth and development of people, who follow them.

Different leadership styles, such as servant, transformational, democratic, authoritarian and laisser-faire provide different leadership opportunities and bring different results for organizations.   Servant leadership assumes leadership through the developing of relationship and through the teamwork. Servant leaders care about the opinions of other people and promote trust and culture inside of the organization.   Transformational leadership centers on positive change, inspired by the leader. Transformational leaders center on individual characteristics and make everything possible for their employees to develop their potential in the best way.  Transformational leaders center on individual needs. They also use intellectual stimulation, aiming to make people look for solutions to the problem and this way grow and develop their potentials. They also put an accent on inspiration and motivation. Transformational leaders can become an effective instrument of change and innovation. Democratic leadership is often associated with teamwork, participative approach and problem-solving. Democratic leader appreciates all members of the team and gives all of them the chance to express themselves. At the same time, he dedicates much time to cooperation and team cooperation. Effective communication is an important instrument of democratic leadership. Authoritarian leadership fosters autocratic decision making when the leader takes all important decisions and employees have no choice but to follow his orders and directions. The authoritarian leader wants obedience and punishes those, who do not follow his orders. Despite the fact this leadership style is often judged for lack of democracy and individual approach, it can be effective in the cases of emergency and during the crisis. Laisser-faire leadership style assumes minimum directions from the leader. In this kind of leadership, the leader becomes a distanced observer, giving initiative to employees.  Leadership styles present different models of relations inside of the organization. Transformational and democratic leadership models are recognized as the most effective models for contemporary organizations. At the same time, in some rare cases, other models can be used effectively.  For example, despite the fact authoritarian leadership style is often judged for lack of democracy and individual approach, it can be effective in the cases of emergency and during the crisis.

Leadership is not only a privilege, but also a big responsibility. Nowadays, when people get leadership position the first thing they think about is their new privileges and advantages. In reality,  people who become leaders become limited in their opportunities, because they should serve to bigger amount of people.  Unfortunately, this statement is very seldom followed by   contemporary leaders. High social or political standing becomes a heavy burden, and not everybody can take  it with dignity. Some leaders try to increase their power and get more influence over people and resources by any means.  It is important to keep in mind that any unethical means cannot be associated with true leaders, as leaders are generally treated as an example to follow for other people. At this point, any unethical actions have negative effect not only on a leader himself, but also on people who follow him, because they apply wrong set of behavior while watching those, who are in power.

During last several years,   series of load accusations touched a lot of people with big financial and political power. For example, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, an outstanding French politician and a former head of the International Monetary Fund was accused of sexual assault. A loud corruption scandal burst out around the FIFA in 2015. During the investigation it came out that highest authorities of this organization, including its head Sepp Blatter, are involved in corruption. The scale of this corruption is measured by entire countries. Unethical use of power can have short-term positive effect and bring a leader short-time benefits, but in long run such a strategy will create negative atmosphere inside of the organization, and will, most likely, ruin relations between the leader and other people.   This way, unethical use of power is the result of egocentric desire to get more power than a person deserves. Different manipulations have only short-term effect and finally result in significant loses of authority, finances and social standing. Ethical principles and moral regulations are higher laws, which are common for all people. Leaders should become examples of following these laws and regulations. Breaking them they disproof their right to occupy leading positions and illustrate their incompetence. Unethical means to get more power illustrate that leaders are guided by selfish motifs but not desire to help other people and bring use to the organization or society. The power  becomes  a magnifying glass which shows bad and good qualities of people. Selfish people with selfish desires turn to selfish leaders who think only about their profit and power. Responsibility is the main characteristic of effective leader and only this quality gives him moral right to look for the ways to increase his influence.   At this point, ethical aspect of leadership becomes of primary importance.   I believe that ethical leadership is a complicated and multi-layered phenomenon. From the one hand, moral and ethical values are developed through the life span and these characteristics are hard to change. From the other hand quality leadership aims to give people not only plan of actions, but also moral and ethical guidelines. At this point the leader becomes an ethical authority and should perform certain actions in order to fulfill this role.  Ethical leadership has two important components. Ethical leaders should behave ethically. All their actions, judgements and behavior should be guided by ethical norms and standards. It is impossible to speak about any kind of ethical authority in the situation when the leader does not follow ethical norms himself. The second element of ethical leadership is the leadership style itself.  It also should be ethical. This means that ethical leader should combine ethical behavior and ethical leadership.  Ethical leadership includes ethical attitudes towards employees, encouraging people and helping them discover this inner potential.

Studying different leadership models, I was looking for the one, which would be applicable for myself. While reflecting to different methods and techniques, I stared recollecting people, who gave me inspiration as leaders. I started from different kind of famous people, but later I turned to my personal experience. I remembered several people, who gave me support and inspiration. After careful analysis, I came to the conclusion that all these people helped me to change, transform and become better. I was happy, when I got reasonable orders and directions and got praise and recognition of my skills and abilities, but such leadership style did not change me as a personality. I felt really inspired close to those leaders, who let me grow and transform as a personality and as a professional. I came to the conclusion that true leadership consisted of inspiration and transformation. This realization became a turning point, which distinguished my leadership style and leadership methods. I made a choice for the sake of transformational leadership and never regretted or doubted this choice later.  Transformational leadership takes into account a long-term perspective and aims to improve lives of all people. In contrast to charismatic leadership, where the leader is interested in making people follow him and wants others to fulfill his goals, transformational leadership takes into account need and desires of all members of the organization and chooses the best way to move in direction which would be profitable for the most members of the team.  Charismatic leader is centered on himself and his personality, while transformational leader thinks about others but himself. Transformational leadership presents new type of relationship between the leader and the subordinates. In these kind of relations common good and development of people become the main focus of attention. Finally, this position becomes beneficial for both – for leader and for people who follow him, because such kind of leadership assumes best coordination and highest achievements of everybody.  I remember positive effect transformational leaders had on my personality and on my professional and communicative skills. I do admit that to certain extent meeting outstanding transformational leaders has changed my personality. The did not teach me or gave directions, but rather crated conditions for my personal development and growth. These methods gave me deep understanding of my personal strengths and weaknesses and taught  me to take responsibility and answer challenges. A leader is a person who knows how to inspire other people. He should be an example of others and should possess characteristics which make others be willing to follow him. In addition, he should be able to make a good impression on people.  That is why it is naturally for the leader to be aware of his positive qualities and be able to show them. Good qualities for the leaders are not only a set of personal characteristics, but also a visiting card, which makes him a leader and distinguishes him from others.  For each person it is important to have correct self-perception. This can improve the process of communication between people and help to avoid disappointments. For leaders an adequate self-perception is even more important, because they take responsibility for other people and this way should know their own strong and weak sides.  Ability to see the situation as a whole and its separate components, ability to take complicated decisions, ability to predict the development of situation, ability to take responsibilities and desire to take care about people are important qualities which make a good leader. Therefore, each strong leader has a unique style of leadership which differentiates him from others and it is important to be aware of personal strong and weak points in order  to take the best advantage of them.
