Lingua Franca; Englishnization Discussion

1) What are some possible drawbacks to having a native speaker on a ‘lingua franca’ (i.e.: language adopted as a common language btw speakers whose native languages are different) team?

Lingua franca (ELF) causes challenges as the native speakers often struggle to use it, express their own ideas, and express themselves as individuals. Some native speakers state that lingua franca brings negative effects on both native and non-native speakers. Some of them claim that it is deficient and incomplete. Native speakers are often afraid of using their native language as lingua franca, because they believe it lacks of quality and falls short of native speakers’ standards. Most native speakers state that a lingua franca is a big disadvantage for them.

2) People arguably communicate best in their native language (mother tongue). Is it a disservice to force them to use another language at work?

As know, working in your native language brings many advantages. Today, most multinational organizations force their employees to communicate another language at work. With an increasing diverse workforce, employees require their stuff to have excellent foreign language skills in order to satisfy performance of the job. They say it is crucially important for native speakers to learn the skills of dealing with another language successfully and fluently at the work process. But, as evidence shows, working in a foreign language is very hard. Employees express their ideas, make calls, communicate with different individuals, provide opposing arguments and beliefs, and negotiate with clients. It is harder to do all these things using a foreign language. It is impossible to show all their talents and skills, or think or speak faster using foreign language.

3) Is “Englishnization” a good idea for Rakuten?

Many Rakuten employees questioned the value of requiring English, and as the human resource manager says: “They do not have a chance to use English at work. Their customers are strictly Japanese, and they are extremely busy. These people have been working so hard for Rakuten and have brought great benefits to the company but they won’t be promoted just because they cannot speak English” (p. 9).

I consider Englishnization is a good idea as it can bring global success, internationalize the company, cause internationalization of the employees and expansion of the company internationally. I think Englishnization initiative brings success and benefits for both the company and its employees for a long period of time.
