Mandatory Attendance Of College

Mandatory attendance of college could increase students’ academic achievement and help them train discipline and responsibility. At the present moment the question  of attendance is resolved differently in different collages. In the most cases  administration lets teachers formulate rules of attendance. A lot of professors state that mandatory attendance is important for academic performance. Statistic data shows that course attendance and successful performance have a positive correlation (Romer 1993). At the same time, opponents of the mandatory attendance state that there is no strong correlation between academic performance and attendance of classes.  A common argument given by students who pay for their education states that since they pay for their study, they can not punished  for not attending some classes.

Mandatory attendance has always been the reason of debates. Teachers, students and administration of learning institutions express different opinions concerning this subject. From the one hand discipline can have a significant influence on students’ successful performance and reaching their academic goals. Learning institutions are developed in a way to create the most favorable conditions for the communication between teachers and students. While attending lectures students get  opportunity to learn theory and practice with qualified professionals’   assistance.   Professors want their students to be present at their classes. They believe that direct communication is an effective way to acquire new knowledge and new skills. At the same time, education should teach young people to be independent and responsible. This means that they should possess a certain degree of freedom. They should be able to take some decisions concerning their study and attendance can become one of such decisions. Usually students want to get freedom in order to be able to choose which classes to attend.  There is a number of students who prefer to study alone and they will experience a number of difficulties if they are made to attend all classes. Mandatory attendance does not let students plan their study process. Students who seek high grades usually attend the course regularly. They do it consciously because they want to reach academic success. At the same time those, who do not want to study will not get much profit from mandatory attendance. Students who do not want to study will not show better results if made   attend classes. In addition, those, who do not want to study will have negative impact on the study atmosphere.

The question of mandatory attendance is doubtful question. It requires a thoughtful approach. In  addition, it is important to take into account  opinion of different participants of the study process. It is necessary to take into account the opinion of teachers, as well as the opinion of students. It would be useful to find a compromise. First of all, it is necessary to determine classes where attendance should be definitely mandatory. Such classes as lab classes, practical classes and some other classes should be mandatory because they present unique knowledge and training. In addition, it is important to listen to the professors’ opinion, since each of them knows how attendance can help to acquire his subject. Some classes and courses are easier acquired while class study, while others can be learnt outside of the classroom. Since there is no one definite answer which would resolve the debated over the mandatory attendance, it would be possible to agree on a compromise. It is possible to make mandatory only the part of the classes. It is also possible to make mandatory the number of classes which should be attended. This way student will have opportunity to choose which classes to visit. At the same time administration will be sure that students attend at least the part of classes.
