Mary Barton by Elizabeth Gaskell Review

A piece from Elizabeth Gaskell’s writing describes the theme of social injustice and illustrates great disparities, which emerged between the employers and the working class in the middle of the 19th century. The author uses several literary techniques to convey her message to the audience. Personal style of narration and first-person narration make the reader, readers feel more involved in the narration. Antitheses or contrast is the main literary technique, used in this part of the narration. The author contrasts the life of poor people from industrial city to prosperous life of their employers. The author uses bright imaginary to show luxury life of rich people, who know no need and change one luxury house to another one, each time buying more and more expansive property. These images are confronted by descriptions of poor people’s lives, who can hardly buy enough food to eat. The author uses repetitions to underline the contrast. The narration switches from rich to poor, each time describing new and new stunning differences, which only underline the gap, which exists between different social classes. The story moves in spiral, each time describing extremes from both social categories – rich and poor.  The story reaches its climax by the end of the writing piece.  The contrast becomes overwhelmingly visible, when John Barton,  suppressed by terrible news about the death of his small son, who had not enough food to eat and renew his forces after the scarlet fever, meets Mrs. Hunter, who is followed by a shop man, who carries the most exotic and expansive foods for a party. Detailed descriptions of expansive food in the shop window sound as mocking, contrasted to Burton’s story, who has to return home to his dead son.
