Minoan Civilization Essay

Minoan civilization has appeared in Crete in 3000 BC and disappeared about 1100 BC. These time frames belong to Bronze Age. Minoan civilization was established in 4 cities including Phaistos, Malia, Zakros and Knossos, a capital. The name of Minoan civilization derives from Minos, either a dynastic title or the name of a particular ruler of Crete.

Long time there existed discussion about Minoans’ origin. It was suggested that the Minoans were refugees from Egypt’s Nile delta which could be proved by similarities between Egyptian and Minoan art, for example, building circular tombs. Though,  recent studies based on the mitochondrial DNA analysis have shown that Minoan DNA was most similar to populations from western and northern Europe. It means that the Minoan civilization was a local development. They probably reached the island around 9,000 years ago, in Neolithic times. (bbc.com).

The geographical location of Minoans contributed to appearing a lot of similarities with Greek culture though Minoan civilization features numerous elements of its own culture.

Minoan society was quite developed. It can be proved by numerous findings including buildings, sculptures, frescoes, paintings, ceramics, writings (clay tablets) and other pieces of art.

Visual art such as paintings, frescoes, pottery reveals main features of Minoan culture. If depicts mostly landscapes and animals including monkeys, birds, dolphins, and fish.

Bulls were prominent in Minoan art and their horns were considered sacred. It was the most significant element of art which gave birth to the legend of Theseus and the labyrinth-dwelling Minotaur. This legend was included into the later classical Greek mythology (Cartwright).

The most popular artworks depicting humans are voluptuous female mother-earth goddess figure and male figure holding several animals, seem to have been almost worshiped (britannica.com).

The religion of the Minoans remains sketchy but based on the pieces of art of could be concluded that it was mostly nature and human-oriented.
