What impact does your sunscreen choice have on ocean organisms, especially those in the coral reefs?

Coral reefs cover less than one per cent of the underwater surface they function like a home for preservation underwater inhabitants, including varies types of fishes (25% of all kinds of fishes), corals, and sea creatures and underwater animals. Coral reefs serve as one of the most productive sea ecosystem. And according to the research, chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, and 4MBC contribute to a stress condition of coral reefs and make their negative devastating effect on ocean organisms, ruin see weeds that live in coral environment. Additionally, chemical element can make a negative impact on coral colors, ruin reliable food sources for corals, increase coral illnesses, and even lead to their death. When the coral dies, then the entire reef ecosystem ruins as well.

What is the difference between a chemical based sunscreen and a physical sunscreen?

Sunscreen comes in many forms and differently affects our bodies and environment. Chemical based sunscreens and physical sunscreens significantly differ from each other. A chemical based sunscreen contains carbon-based compounds like oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone that make a chemical reaction and transform UV rays into heat. A physical sunscreen reflects UV rays with active mineral blocker; this type of sunscreen contains active mineral ingredients such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide that interact actively and preserve skin from damaging UV rays.

There are a number of dangerous ingredients in sunscreen both for our bodies, environment, and underwater ecosystem. On the back of the sunscreen product we can notice the list of active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as physical blockers, and carbon based chemical sunscreens that include oxybenzone, butylparaben, 4MBC, octinoxate that can be dangerous for corals, our bodies, and environment in general. I consider it is essential to avoid carbon based chemical sunscreens’ ingredients that can cause negative impact on human organisms and nature around us.
