The Notion ‘The Dream’ for America, China, Korea

Prove disagree with, or qualify the statement that “the presences of ‘The Dream’ in America, China, Korea, etc. is ultimately beneficial (i.e., socially, economically, politically) to the people who live or migrate to the country

Introduction

It is no wonder that the notion ‘The Dream’ has been in the hot seat for decades. American, Chinese, Korean (these countries are of priority in the contemporary world), and other states’ ‘dream’ might differ due to various factors, such as politic situation, economic drop/growth, social role, and so forth. American dream seems to be the leading example for other countries due to its power, influence, and significance across the globe. The main concern is the different perception toward this ‘dream.’ By this, many surveys and studies imply the role of inhabitants and immigrants regarding particular idyll within a country. As a result, today’s task is to define the truth behind the walls: whether it is beneficial for those who live or immigrate to the country. Although American, Chinese, and Korean’s ideal dream is a big controversy, the bulk of evidence proves that modern dreams confuse people’s lives and differently impact their perception of the state itself because of modern transformations in a social, political, and economic sense.

The United States

The USA had everything vital to make the American dream a reality for a simple citizen of the country with the help of substantial natural resources that are still unexplored, an efficient economy, a convenient geographical position, far from European conflicts. The concept of the “American dream” is often associated with immigrants who have arrived in the country seeking a better life. The concept is closely related to the concept of “self-made person,” i.e., a person who has independently achieved success in life through hardships and efforts. However, when it comes to immigration many people today have traded the optimism and simplicity of their day for divisive politics and bureaucracy (Vallorani 6). Migration becomes much harder today due to governmental policies and economic structure.

For instance, Barak Obama in his speech at the Democratic National Convention (2004) conceded the compassionate story of his parents exerting efforts to provide the best for their children. He implied that the American dream could be achieved due to hard work and goals. He said: “That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles” (Obama 5). Notwithstanding, political strategy alters these possibilities for new immigrants. It is almost impossible to move to the USA due to various causes such as the visa refusal, Muslim ban, official’s neglect, etc. Critics of such a platform argue that these policies incentivize immigrants to latch onto entitlement programs offered at taxpayer expense, which is ultimately a significant disservice to them — and the taxpayer (Vallorani 10). Thus not everyone believes that the American dream is a positive aspect of society.

China

The Chinese dream is a new notion. Xi Jinping, China’s President, confirmed his new strategy toward peoples and country as a whole. Kuhn (2013) divides the Chinese Dream into four parts:

  •     Strong China (economically, politically, diplomatically, scientifically, militarily);
  •     Civilized China (equity and fairness, rich culture, high morals);
  •     Harmonious China (amity among social classes);
  •     Beautiful China (healthy environment, low pollution).

Though China tries their best to complete these strategic plans, they are likely to fail regarding the overall governmental system and the nation. Chinese dream will not save China and give people the life they dream of because of numerous reasons. For instance, China is ‘famous’ for its corruption, and the country cannot prosper due to its high level. Also, people in China seek happiness, security, and freedom, which the communist dictatorship cannot give them. Its power cannot achieve a comprehensive prosperous society (Mosher 142).

Also, Mosher (2017) explains that the Chinese government wants to spread the Chinese dream beyond the country. However, even its closest neighbors (Russia, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan) do not need China’s dream. The population of these countries knows very little about the Chinese dream and does not seek to divide it. The big difference in mentality, religion, culture in general, does not give a chance to the Chinese dream to find followers in these countries. Xi Jinping desperately tries to contrast Chinese dream with American dream forgetting about real value. Hence, China’s dream is bound to drop down.

Korea vs. America

While American and Chinese dreams are officially established notions, other countries are also trying to implement own dreams through many streams and steps. For instance, Korea is looking out for new strategic plans and governmental policies to relive Korean nation and set the core value across the globe. Many Koreans’ generations have immigrated to the USA seeking a better life; now the Korean nation is attempting its own (Park 114). Korea considers America as a free country and believes that personal and political freedoms are of priority. However, it is hard to achieve in such close-minded countries as Korea, but it does not reject the desire of the peoples to be free.

Korea somehow overlaps with China since they both want to recreate their history and establish the global role, but at the same time, they cannot provide nations with freedom of actions and speech as in the USA. Even today Chinese and Korean people reconsider the American dream due to Trump’s governmental policies and immigration process. Most of the Asian countries leave out the idea of traveling to the USA or reuniting with family members. Instead, the governments try to create own ideas to keep their population in homelands. That is why China and Korea are trying to implement own ‘American’ dreams in their countries.

Conclusion

It is necessary to understand that sometimes dream does not come true or alter over the years, whether in a political or personal sense. American dream helped a lot of immigrants in the past and promoted their vision to other countries, which are now trying to recreate or relive their overall nations and systems. American, Chinese, Korean, and other dreams are controversial and hard to trace or explain in the modern world. Ultimately, even if their intentions are right, the process and consequences are far from the idyll both for citizens and immigrants.
