Modern Greek Culture Essay

Greece is of the one of the world countries with really rich culture, as it started to develop thousands of years ago and was under the impact of the Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Other cultures, such as for example the Persian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Venetian Republic, all had their impact upon the development of modern Greek culture. Greece was considered to be the place, where democracy was born. “The ancient Greeks pioneered in many fields that rely on systematic thought, including biology, geometry, history, philosophy, and physics. They introduced such important literary forms as epic and lyric poetry, history, tragedy, and comedy. In their pursuit of order and proportion, the Greeks created an ideal of beauty that strongly influenced Western art.” (Thornton, 2002, p. 22).

Modern Greece is the country of versatile interests and compositions of diverse cultures. Most of local people, living there, are proud of their culture and support their national and cultural belonging. Culture of Greece consists of religion, culture, music, wines, food and their language. The role of language could not be underestimated. “Ancient Greek language and is affiliated to the part of the Greek or Hellenic branch of Indo-European. The first written Greek was found on baked mud tablets, in the remains of the Knossos Palace of Crete island.” (Thornton, 2002, p. 35). Most of Greek traditions and customs come from paganism or are of religious origins. Festivals, which are rather popular till nowadays, mostly bear religious character. They are celebrated with traditional music and dances. Music is an important aspect in Greece culture, it dates back to ancient times and is influenced by various cultures. Greek dishes are well-known in the whole world, because the quality of wine and cheese are outstanding. These products are characteristic for Greece, whereas cuisine is influenced by French, Italian, Turkish cuisine.

Overall, culture of Greece is rather complex and unique, it roots from ancient times and is under the impact of other cultures.
