Experiencing Jazz: Hard Bop, Fusion | Discussion

1.Hard bop just not followed the jazz performance forms. There were just solo: trumpet solo, saxophone solo. There were a melody, the theme, solo and the theme again. The following features are considered to be peculiar to hard bop style:

  • African American identity,
  • minor keys,
  • great artists with inexhaustible energy, the rollicking,
  • rhythmic feeling associated with the style,
  • traditional gospel music elements,
  • more bluesy sound.

The pace is usually slower, recognizable, beautiful melodies. majeure mode.  The solo develops organically within the context of the composition. The hard bop composition is characterized as hot, energetic, loud and exciting, what is peculiar to such a style. The composition has typically fast speed and unison playing between the melody instruments. The sound is bluesy, the tunes are complex. The intro sets the atmosphere, what is also an essential feature.

2. By attempt to return jazz to its primitive and break down jazz convention musicians wanted to express themselves by creating music on the spot and being inventive.  Jazz compositions are characterized by:

  • discarding fixed chord changes or tempos
  • avant-garde
  • emphasis on collective improvisation
  • attempt to return jazz to its primitive
  • break down jazz convention

The important components are swing the momentum when you want to dance, and syncopation. Thus, the rhythm of this style is often syncopated – placing accents in surprising places, and sometimes polyrhythmic when multiple rhythms occur at the same time.  Half of the Jazz music is invented spontaneously. Melodies and changes of the tunes make up a framework for a possibility of the songs.

3. Fusion combines two or more genres. Such music is characterized by:

  • Rock
  • variety of musical styles
  • electric instruments
  • pure melody and tonal color

In fact, the style incorporates elements of various musical traditions: electric sounds, the riffs of rock music, blues rhythms, funk, compositions of classical music and different folk music traditions which are gathered together in a jazz environment of complex improvisation. Electric guitars, keyboards became to be commonly used instruments. Fusion varies in complexity, employing groove based vamps fixed to a single key, a chord with a simple melody motif. Trumpets and saxophone can be used as melody and soloing.
