Jazz : Bebop – Evolution or Revolution?

Bebop emerged in the early 1940s as an impressive style of jazz music. Taking into consideration the key characteristics of Bebop, everyone would agree that the interpretation of Bebop revolution can be explained as cultural self-expression. Hence, Bebop can be interpreted as a revolution in jazz music due to its significance in the masses and dynamism in evaluation of its meaning.

To start with, Bebop is described as structurally and emotionally more complex style than swing. In addition, Bebop is characterized by its unusual fast tempo, dynamic instrumental virtuosity and amazing improvisation that reflects harmony in music structure. According to Piero Scaruffi, “Bebop was a more “private” form of expression, Bebop was a music to listen to, as opposed to dance to” (1). In fact, this style of jazz music was widely discussed in the media due to its dynamism and rhythm that stood for the form of revolutionary mood. Traditionally, the bebop combo includes the following music instruments: saxophone, piano, trumpet, double bass and drums. The format of Bebop music contributed to the development of the existential mood.

In general, Bebop can be explained as a revolution in jazz music because of its revolutionary approach to highlight the power of jazz. Bebop is produced by improvisation that leads to the emergence of a completely new phenomenon in music that has nothing common with the previous jazz tradition, but represents the so-called rebellious nature of that tradition. Bebop is revolution in jazz music. Many Bebop players demonstrated the complexity of the new style through self-expression in Bebop music, providing no opportunity to dancing. Undoubtedly, Bebop is a revolution in music as it relates not only to the black people who love dancing, but also to the whites who adore listening to and analyzing soul music. The energy produced by Bebop players encourages the development of revolutionary ideas in music.
