Tana French’s “In The Woods” Book Review

‘In the Woods’ is a mystery novel with an intriguing outcome written by Tana French in 2007. In fact, it deals with a surviving boy, Rob Ryan and his close friend Cassie Maddox, who helps him investigate the murder of a 12-year-old girl.

The pair investigates Katy’s murder from the very different perspectives. Despite the various possibilities are observed, the detectives come up empty-handed without any results. As a result, Rob ‘is forced by the investigation to confront his own buried mysteries’ (Lyall par. 6) in order to find a connection between his disappearance and the case they are investigating with Cassie. He even tries to spend the night in the woods, but cannot stay alone, and thus calls Cassie in order to pick him up.

Indeed, masterly written from beginning to end, the novel provides the readers with different unexpected turns in order to keep them guessing throughout the story and wanting to get to know whether the two cases (Rob’s disappearance and the murder of a 12-year-old girl) are related to each other or not. In the end of the novel, it becomes clear that the killer is Damien, who murdered the little girl because he was obsessed by Rosalind, Katy’s older sister, who turned out to be a psychopath. It is clarified that Rosalind is responsible for Katy’s murder, pushing Damien to commit the crime since she was jealous of her little sister.

In the final scene, Rob takes a break from a case in order to watch and understand the major reason for his disappearance and the murders of his best friends. However, the case involving the murders of his friends is never disclosed or resolved. As a consequence, the readers are left to wonder what actually happened those days.

Thus, taking the above-stated information into consideration, it is possible to draw a conclusion that the book from 10 to 20 chapters tells the readers about the final outcome of Katy’s murder. ‘In the Woods’ is not actually a happy story, but on the contrary, it is a mysterious novel that will keep the readers’ attention until the end, making it more interesting and exciting.
