Why Nora Is a Hero in My Eyes

Nora Helmer is a central character of the play “A Doll’s House” written by Henrik Ibsen. She is the wife of a lawyer Helmer, and her image as well as her presentation in the play forces the readers to discuss this heroine from various perspectives for many times. On the one hand, the woman is considered to be rather light-headed person, but on the other hand, she is described by the author as a person with a strong character. Thus, the main aim of the assignment is to discuss the way of life of this heroine, and I am going to explain why Nora is a hero in my eyes.

Beginning with the description of Nora’s life, it becomes obvious that the woman has almost everything what she needs for happiness: beloved husband, children, comfortable home, etc. But looking at the life of the woman, I found that the woman’s happiness seems to be an illusion because Nora’s husband doesn’t respect his wife, he was an egoist by his nature, even considering the woman as something similar to beautiful “doll” or a toy in his hands. He never discusses serious questions with her, and never believes in the power of her character and possibility to make a decision. So, the woman’s illusory happiness makes me to observe this heroine with more details.

Firstly, I was really impressed by Nora’s decision to help her husband when he was seriously ill and the family had no money for treatment. The woman found a way to find money, sincerely believing in rightness of her step, but her husband was not able to value such her attempts, even realizing that she did it for the purpose to save his life. Secondly, Nora impressed me by her strong will, when she made a decision to leave her house where she “happily” lived with her husband a considerable number of years. All the world around considered such her decision to be a mistake, but nobody knows what a strong feeling seized the woman’s heart.

I strongly believe that Nora made a right decision in her desire to leave her home, even choosing uncertainty because a person with such a strong character should be responsible for the own life, and such people like Nora should be surrounded by people who are worthy their love and care. Moreover, Nora seems to me a hero because she showed to all women of her time that the woman’s place is not near a husband but in society, where every woman should have the right to be a personality with own thoughts, decisions and views. I realized that Nora was forced to leave her past life for the purpose to revalue her previous life and to “educate” the own character. Thus, this woman became a symbol of a woman of new age, the woman who was tired to live only by her family problems because the whole world was waiting for her thoughts and activities.

In closing, I have explained why Nora is a hero in my eyes, and illustrated my answer with many examples. Moreover, I also have showed that the playwright puts the central issue of person realization for the first place in the play, using a specific example of the fate of this woman in bourgeois society. Thus, it seems to me that Nora is a hero because she found enough power in her character to continue her way of self-development instead of closing her eyes at the surrounding reality as other women did in her environment.
