Nurse Outcomes Such as Satisfaction, Empowerment, Burnout, Retention, Nurse-assessed Quality of Care

Today there is much information in scientific literature about the relationship between nursing leadership and nurse outcomes, such as satisfaction, empowerment, burnout, retention, nurse-assessed quality of care, etc. I have chosen the journal article “Leadership styles and outcome patterns for the nursing workforce and work environment: A systematic review” from the International Journal of Nursing Studies because this article discusses the role of nursing leadership in today’s healthcare environment and addresses the significance of nurse outcomes. The authors of the article call for the development of nursing leadership in order to “build high quality work environments, effectively implement new models of care, and bring health and wellbeing to an exhausted and stretched nursing workforce” (Cummings et al., 2010, p. 363). The major goal of researchers is to explore the relationships existing between different styles of nursing leadership and nurse outcomes. This topic is of great importance because it helps to better understand how to improve nurse outcomes and create healthy work environment.

The researchers used the search strategy in order to evaluate quantitative studies that explored nursing leadership behaviors and nurse outcomes, investigate various quality assessments and data analysis. The major finding of the article point out to the fact that different forms of nursing leadership have different effects on the quality of nursing workforce and the effectiveness of work environments.  It has been revealed that nursing leadership that is based on “task completion alone is not sufficient to achieve optimum outcomes for the nursing workforce” (Cummings et al., 2010, p. 363). In addition, it has been found that both healthcare institutions and staff member should be encouraged or motivated to develop the proper transformational and relational leadership strategies to improve “nurse satisfaction, recruitment, retention, and healthy work environments, particularly in this current and worsening nursing shortage” (Cummings et al., 2010, p. 383).

The article “Leadership styles and outcome patterns for the nursing workforce and work environment: A systematic review” is of great importance for healthcare professionals as the authors of the article highlight the specific leadership approaches, which can be very effective both for the nursing workforce and today’s healthcare organizations. It is obvious that the members of the governance body should display not only effective relational skills, but also they should demonstrate their “concern for their employees as persons,” working collaboratively and achieving the established goals (Cummings et al., 2010, p. 383). Besides, it is necessary to remember that nursing leadership helps to effectively manage various challenges that occur in today’s healthcare workplace.

The message I would like to bring forward to the governance body about the importance of strong nurse leadership refers to the role of nursing leadership in today’s work environment. I know that today healthcare organizations face a shortage of nursing leaders. Therefore, it is of great importance to implement the proper leadership strategies to develop and promote “viable nursing leadership for the future of the healthcare organization and the quality care for patients” (Cummings et al., 2010, p. 383). Undoubtedly, the findings from the article should be taken into consideration by the governance body as they suggest that it is necessary to invest sufficient energy into relationships with nursing workforce, and that relational leaders can have positive impact on the health and well-being of nurse outcomes as well as the outcomes for patients (Cummings et al., 2010).
