Obama’s Deal : The Health Care Reform Essay

The urgent need of the health care reform has been evident from the beginning of Barak Obama’s Presidency since a large part of Americans was uninsured and, therefore, had either limited or no access to health care services. Moreover, the health care reform was one of the milestones of his Presidential campaign. However, the implementation of the reform confronted substantial challenges and opposition from the part of different stakeholders, including not only political opponents but also health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, that forced Barak Obama to make a deal with multiple stakeholders to find the compromise and complete his health care reform.

The goal of the health care reform was to make health care services affordable to all Americans. The need of health care reform was evident and Obama’s precursors were also aware of the necessity of such reform. However, their steps to reform the US health care system were ineffective and inconsistent in light of the core problem – high costs of health care and unaffordable of health insurance and, therefore, health care, for over a quarter of Americans.

Obama’s intended to create the public option of health care coverage as an alternative to health insurance to enhance the competition in the health care market and offer low-income Americans an opportunity to get access to health care services. In addition, he attempted to offer the broader government support to low-income Americans through Medicare and Medicaid, including discounts for medicines that Americans involved in the government-sponsored programs could count upon. However, health insurance companies opposed to the appearance of the public rival and overall Obama had to make a deal with them by refusing from the public option but refusing the support of his reform and wider inclusion of low-income Americans in health care reform.
