Treaties Affecting Outer Space – Outdated? Free

Outer Space for National Countries

While the exploration of the outer space has been a huge leap in society’s development, it has brought the responsibility of the international level with it. Since multiple countries have started to actively examine outer space in the middle of the 20th century, several agreements between the countries had to be made, in order to explore the cosmos peacefully. Such agreements are the “Outer Space Treaty of 1967” and “The Moon Treaty of 1979”. Since both of the treaties have been signed relatively a while ago, several issues have been seen, which violate the treaties.

“Outer Space Treaty of 1967” claims that “outer space is to be used for “peaceful purposes” – weapons of mass destruction cannot be used in space”, what is more, “celestial territory (such as the moon or Mars), is not subject to “national appropriation” – in other words, no country can lay claim to them.” (Stuart, 2017) “The Moon Treaty of 1979” has similar statement that the Moon is the entire world’s heritage, therefore cannot be claimed by a country. What is more, similarly to the Outer Space Treaty, the Moon cannot be used for military purposes, as well as commercial. (Howard, 2017) However, since the signing of these treaties, there have been situations, which are said to violate them. For example, some countries tried to claim the segment of the orbit, which was situated under their territories. They claimed that such actions do not violate the treaty, as the space over the countries is technically their territory.

Due to such incidents, it is clear that the treaties need to have updates, in order for every statement to be clear. There are some positions in the treaty that may seem vague, therefore, they need to be restated, so that there are no conflicts among the countries.
