Saint Cesar of Delano Essay

The name of Cesar Chavez is for many people associated with fighting for truth and freedom. At the same time to the same extent as many other heroic figures; Chavez caused a lot of controversies due to some of his actions and revealing of some of his personal traits. Starting from the 1970s his actions were widely discussed by critics and there appeared some questions about the price of his accomplishments. In his essay Saint Cesar of Delano Richard Rodriguez assumes that the famous leader of the farm workers’ movement was an iconic figure of 1960s. At the same time his union could not be considered successful, because of the strange embodiment of the psychic contact between the two countries – America and Mexico. The writer explains that the Sixties used to be the time of religious idealism, and this fact contributed to the formation of the certain image of Chavez. He was fighting for improvements of the working conditions for people, putting these aims into the frames of religious movement. For most Mexican Americans he became a kind of spiritual authority this way.

Rodriguez describes the personality of Chavez as “brilliantly theatrical”, which is an advantage for having impact upon people; still his actions like refusing to eat were more than strange for the rest members of UFW, but rather convincing for the millions of Americans. The fact that Chavez borrowed such practice as “the Game”, which was applied by Charles Dederich, with the aim to support discipline of his people, also had negative impact upon general image of the leader. Most of critics agreed that such practice could mean that Chavez was turning into a tyrant. Thus on the one hand the name of Chavez is associated with a real fighter for human rights and on the other hand some of his actions and sides of his character diminished his achievements.
