Personal Statement: Experience Of Social Work

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service to others”

Ghandi

Social work is an essential part of human interactions that is based on protection of human rights and dignity. I had a chance to assess the benefits of this profession, applying my skills in advocacy, coordination of services and sharing compassion with others. If a person makes a decision to lose himself/herself in service to others, he/she will have an opportunity to attain high levels of self-actualization and self-acceptance. To tell the truth, I began “to lose myself” when I was working as a student college and career counsellor at the local high school. I was involved in various activities that allowed me to better understand students’ potential. I worked as a special education substitute teacher sharing my experience with college students and giving them the proper knowledge to make reasonable  choices and decisions.  Actually, I had enough skills, knowledge and experience to provide socialization skills to the students diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. These professional tasks helped me to learn how to integrate community services, how to foster peer support and how to involve  families in the life of children in order to promote their physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. I had a chance to improve communication not only with the students with special needs, but also with their parents, most of whom were Russian and Spanish speaking parents. I took part in parent-teacher conferences in order to broaden my horizons.

Undoubtedly, I encountered some barriers while provided educational services to minority groups. I addressed the challenges caused by bureaucracy of the education system. I managed to assess the uniqueness of families while working close with them in order to draw relevant conclusions. Hence, I succeeded in providing special education to children and supplied them with the proper resources for their personal growth. I believe that this experience improved my advocacy skills, communication skills, and leadership skills because  I worked as a child protective specialist. Moreover, my experience in the selected field allowed me to strengthen my skills in advocacy for children with various needs and from different socio-economic backgrounds. I worked diligently on various complicated tasks  to ensure that children and their families have access to the proper resources  which guarantee safety, well-being and goal accomplishment.

Furthermore, as a leader in educational advocacy, I effectively use a wide range of teaching resources that help me to improve my professionalism and develop new skills that will be useful in addressing the challenges of tomorrow. I am focused on resolving the problem of limited resources provided to families with children with disabilities. My own philosophy is to make a difference in the lives of children who need social support. I help my colleagues in providing professional assistance to the families they work with. I know that my experience as a CPS not only taught me effective leadership skills, but also it inspired me to work with my clients more professionally. Thus, I have a chance to conduct an investigation of my own approaches to social work practice in order to identify my strengths and weaknesses in this field. As a result, currently, I can consult both with children and adults.

In addition, I lost myself in services to others when I was able to create a long term relationship with the members I served as a care manager at Village Care of New York. I faced a number of challenges as I had to work with Russian and Spanish speaking members. I needed to improve my  knowledge and efficacy to ensure that each of my clients had reached full potential. I believe that the Master’s Degree in Social Science will help me to strengthen my leadership and clinical skills, and improve confidence in performing the assigned duties and responsibilities in the selected field. I realize that I should communicate with my clients effectively to make clear what strategies should be used to deal with their problems.

As  a matter of fact, my life experience can help me to cope with any difficulties in the field of social work practices. When I entered college, I faced a number of challenges that allowed me to become stronger, more responsible and self-confident. My father was arrested and incarcerated for a year. At that time, I lost faith that good things could happen in my life, as well as lost my intention to help others because of the lack of trust. My grades were falling. However, I knew that I should never give up. I helped my mother to undergo that ordeal. The only way that helped me to improve the situation was taking my practical classes such as Introduction to Methods in Psychotherapy and Intern-ship Class. I understood that I needed to continue my education because I had a chance to make a difference in my life. I was ready to listen to other people’s stories, reflect on their experiences and offer them the proper support. My success in the academic studies made me believe in myself.

Now, I realize that I am well-prepared to participate in social work practices, which require the professional application of social work values, principles, and techniques. I am encouraged to help people, providing them with counselling and psychotherapy services. Currently, my knowledge, skills and experience allow me to draw relevant conclusions on how to improve human development and behaviour in order to enhance well-being of people, address their problems and meet their basic needs. I believe that due attention should be paid to empowerment of people who are vulnerable, socially oppressed, and facing economic challenges. Also, social work education will help me to develop good leadership skills, which are essential in addressing social inequality and promoting a more humane society. My decisions and actions will be guided by my personal values, beliefs, knowledge and experience. I have deep respect for cultural diversity and human rights; therefore, my mission is to improve the health, well-being, and empowerment of community members from different cultural backgrounds.

All in all, I realize that in order to work effectively with people who have serious problems, it is crucial to have the proper skills and abilities. There is a close relationship between social work and mental health. Hence, I need to address any challenges that may confront my social work practice and respond adequately to the changing environment. I need to work collaboratively with clients and their families; therefore, I should improve my collaborative skills and communication skills, decision making and problem solving skills. As a social worker, I need to give a clear explanation of the domain for social work. In order to succeed in social work practices, I should have good leaderships skills, and critical thinking skills. Currently, my level of the assigned skills is high enough to participate in social work activities. I am highly motivated to help other people. Due to my personal strengths and capacities, I can succeed in the selected field. The Master in Social Science Degree is important to me because it guarantees having further achievements both in my professional career and personal life. The Master of Social Science program will help me to broaden and deepen my knowledge base in the areas like public policy, gender and identity studies, educational reform, cross-cultural studies, and politics. I hope that my motto to never give up when someone needs my help will be useful in my professional career.
