Personal Statement for Masters of Social Work Free Essay

Why I Decided to Become a Master of Social Work

Today, education is the key to one’s professional success but I believe that education it is not only the matter of a successful career, wealth, or respect, but also it is the matter of my ability to contribute to my community, where I live, and my ability to make my life more purposeful through helping others. This is why I have decided to apply for the Master of Social Work Program that, as I expect, will help me to expand my knowledge in the field of social work and help me to use my skills and abilities for the good of my community. I am a 28 year old African American Male and the decision to get into the Master of Social Work Program was easy for me to take due to my interest to social science and community life. My favorite quote to live by is “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “what are you doing for other?” by my idol Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Reflecting on my life I have been on the path to social work all my life. One thing I have always known doing and love doing is to help other people. This is why I am applying for a career in the field of social since I know I can make difference in the lives of people. I believe that this is the most important factor of a future career for me compared to any other offers that I may be able to receive.

While applying for my Master of Social Work Program I see myself working in the clinical setting, where I can be really helpful for people, who have not only physical health issues but also need social and psychological support. I want to use my communication, management and leadership skills to help the youth and families in my community and maybe one day the world. At this point n my profession, I feel I would quickly exhaust every possible avenue of challenge and promotion at my current academic skill level. There is a great deal more change that I would like to affect for more people, and on a larger scale.  The path to a graduate Social Work program is the ideal way to bring my plans, goals and dreams to fruition, particularly my understanding of creation and management of social programs. A Master’s of social work is a stepping stone for me, as I am intent upon completing my Ph.D. Therefore, my Master’s degree is a transitional but essential step toward the accomplishment of my career goals because I believe that education is the key to my success in the field of social science and social work.

The decision to get a Master’s degree in the field of social work was fast but not an easy decision for me to take. Social work is something I have been interested in, especially working in my community and with the youth. Helping people overcome obstacles and difficulties and aiding in making the most themselves is a very rewarding yet challenging career that I am ready to embark on. Being 28 years old, I am in the prime of my life and have the experience and wits necessary to be successful. On the other hand, I am aware that Master’s degree will require a lot of efforts from my part because I will have to learn and work hard to succeed. Nevertheless, the end I would like to achieve is the strongest incentive for me to be bold enough and to obtain my Master’s degree in the future.

My Master’s degree is also challenging for me because I am going to be the first person in my family to obtain such a degree. I have been in a member of many teams and have partaken in many events throughout the community. I believe in the concept of a team. Team means to me Together Everyone Achieves More. I want to join the team of social workers and help make change in the world at a professional level. My jobs in customer service, Store managers, and salesman have developed my leadership and communication skills( resume attached). My experience as store manager and supervisor has increased my grasp of an understanding of the fundamental areas of Social Work, such as administration, management and supervisory skills. Previous jobs have honed important skills that make me suitable for this course; in particular, my work as a sales manager required perseverance, the use of diplomacy during team quarrels and the ability to work under pressure towards deadlines, all assets I can put to use at university. My past experience was fruitful for my personal and professional growth and I help that experience will help me to succeed in my learning and in my effort to obtain my Master’s degree.

Social work is not just an abstract concept for me. Instead, I have been doing work that relates closely to social work since I volunteered and worked closely with people in need within my community. On Saturdays for the past year I have volunteered at the Stratford retirement home and taught the senior tenants how to use technology. This was my Senior capstone project. I am an Eagle scout and each year around Thanksgiving, I feed the homeless with the non-profit charity Thanks4giving. The experience of doing the volunteer job was very helpful and rewarding for me because I felt being useful to my community, while life became more meaningful.

At the same time, my decision to focus on Master of Social Science is a sort of come back to school with a clear vision once my football career was over to focus on my education. Being awarded deans list my last 3 semesters in proof of my focus. Since graduating, I have been working 3 jobs to save up for graduate school and to set myself up to continue my high level of focus and being the best student I can be. At any rate, I am going to do my best to be as success-oriented in my learning as I used to be in sports.

My career in the field of social work goes far beyond my personal ambitions or aspirations since I believe it is a socially meaningful work that allows me to contribute to my community and make the life of other people easier and better in a way and this is a part of my personal social responsibility in relation to the community, where I live. We are having a Homeless epidemic in my town of Modesto that needs solving. I believe creating hope and opportunity will aid. I have witnessed firsthand the poor communication amongst community leaders and hope to have a seat at the table on day to help make change. I believe we must still fix the problems of old, while addressing the new problems. In the 60’s, equality was being fought for. Today we must fight for justice.

Empathy goes a long way but it is an integral part of social work. Listening and communication are also great skills to master. We all can learn from each other and ultimately love one another. Tough times don’t last but tough people do. Empathy and leadership have always been my strongest qualities. I have always felt connected to minority groups, being a minority myself. One of the most important things a volunteer is taught is that everyone holds a different attitude to family life, just because it is different or you do not agree with it, does not make it wrong. I have learned a lot about myself and about others from being around such an array of people in my life.

The Mission Statement of the social work program focuses on helping people. The mission statement holds the premise that the program prepares social workers to advance social justice. This education is committed to social change based on an analysis of social, political and economic structures and their impact. This teaching and learning environment enables faculty, students and graduates to collaborate with others to transform the conditions which contribute to privilege and oppression. Graduates are prepared to use an advanced integrative practice approach to work with individuals, families and communities to promote personal and collective liberation.

Finally, I would like to point out that I have a 3.125 GPA for my undergrad. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and I believe this experience will be helpful for my further education. I am a Member of Lampta PI Eta communication honor society and also a member of Alphi Phi Omega Service Fraternity. I am great at public speaking as well and I have got great expectations concerning my Master of Social Work.
