Personal Statement for Nursing School

Nursing is without any doubts one of the most challenging and demanding careers with great rewards. Those individuals, who choose this career, obtain a unique opportunity to help other people. Nursing is the career for reliable and trusting people, who are able to develop good relationship with their patients quickly and effectively. The role of nurses does not remain static, it is changing over time and nurses are expected to become more involved into taking care of the welfare of patients. This fact makes the profession of a nurse rather challenging and hectic, at the same time an individual, who chooses it, has all the chances to develop his best qualities and interpersonal skills.

My interest in nursing began after my aunt was admitted to the hospital for chemotherapy treatment. Being unfamiliar with medical terminology at that time, I did not understand the medical terms that the physicians used, anytime they came in and spoke with us. This left us confused and uncertain about the treatment plan for my aunt. However, while in the hospital the healthcare providers, who supported us most, were the nurses. In addition to providing outstanding care to my aunt, they also explained everything to us in medical terms that we could understand. The nurses gave my aunt a sense of comfort by considering our personal needs and empathized with us. The interaction between my aunt and the nurses and the exceptional care that they provided were enough to direct me into the profession of nursing.

With hard work and motivation from friends and family, I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and I have thoroughly enjoyed my nursing experiences to date, which have been very wide ranging. I consider nursing more as a calling than a career choice and feel honored to have been able to fulfill it. Although I enjoy working as a nurse, various events and situations in my career and life have strongly motivated me that I would be most useful to my community, if I were to become psychiatrist nurse practitioner.

I became interested in psychiatric nursing after I witnessed a psych NP called Yuri interacting with a young suicidal patient during my psychiatric rotation. Mr. Yuri dealt with the situation in a confident and compassionate manner. He listened to the patient’s story, concerns, and over time saved the patient from committing suicide. I was impressed by what I saw and was privileged to learn more about psychiatric nursing during my short interaction with this wonderful APNP.

I work as an RN with Bronx Lebanon Hospital. Although the unit is telemetry, I take care of many patients with mental health problems and participate in programs, related to suicide prevention, crisis intervention, and monitoring patients for medication compliance and side effects. In addition I also act as a patient advocate by interacting in a timely manner between multidisciplinary staff to minimize delays and optimize patient care and efficiency. Being exposed to many distress and mental ill-health has played a role for my decision to pursue my masters in psychiatric nursing.

In addition to my role as an RN, I also had the opportunity to do an internship in Brazil during my undergraduate studies, where I had the chance to interact with patients in Paraiba community hospital. Due to high poverty rates depression, substance abuse, anxiety, family violence, and suicide rates have become a difficult problem for the community to tackle. In addition to this, they lacked sufficient health-care specialists to help them tackle these problems. My time at the hospital helped me to become more compassionate and empathetic towards other individuals, dealing with mental health issues.

It is my dream to achieve the knowledge and skills, which would enable me to assist communities like Paraiba. I realize that this prominent program will draw many highly qualified applicants; however I strongly believe that I have the determination, passion, and the experience to succeed in it.
