Philosophy of Classroom Management | Discussion

Question 1: Goals that relate to student learning.

One of the main goals related to student learning is to present tasks that will generate their enthusiasm. Hence, students will be motivated and interested in learning. Educators should also relate new task to previously learned skills, on the ground of which they can build up new skills and expand their knowledge. Educators should also actively involve students in lessons. They should provide students with immediate performance feedback that will keep them motivated and understand whether they are successful in learning or they have to make more efforts to learn successfully.  At the same time, educators should give students positive feedback on their success in a variety of ways to maintain their positive performance. Educators should teach the class in an organized effective manner bell to bell that will maximize the effectiveness and productivity of educators and students. educators should also maintain consistency with class rules and consequences to prevent disorganization in the classroom that will decrease the effectiveness of learning.

Question 2:What are your current beliefs about classroom behavior/management?

The proximity of educators to students is the number one effective behavior management tool. Educators should understand their students and do their best to make students feel confident in educators. The proximity will help them to establish positive interpersonal relations closing communication gaps and maximizing the effectiveness of learning. Student involvement plays a big part in behavior management since students should participate in classroom activities that will help them to stay focused on learning rather than other activities and issues. Teaching relevance helps with behavior management since students should learn from their past experience and educators should help them to transit from what they have already learn to new knowledge and skills. To stay consistent with consequences, they should not vary by child for the same level offence that means that all students should be treated equally.

In fact, discipline holds power if educators are consistently giving their power to the administrators to deal with behavior issues students will soon see them as powerless. Therefore, educators should deal with all that can be dealt with in their classroom without the involvement of the administrators, unless other options have proved to be inefficient. To maintain discipline, educators should state all rules first and post them positively in the class as if they are guidelines and not orders. Thus, students will be benevolent to follow those rules which they are rather recommended than ordered to follow. In this regard, educators should provide Gentle Verbal reprimands that are quick and respectful and take very little from class time that will help students to respond to remarks positively because they are made in a respectful and inoffensive way.

Question 3: In what ways do your goals and beliefs and the reality of the modern classroom environment complement each other?

My goals encourage students to actively participate in lessons and understand the relevance and how to apply what they are learning from my class to their desired career choice in their future. The correlation between what they learn during my lessons and the real life is crucial for the overall success of learning. In addition, I would encourage students to participate in lessons by teaching and role modeling an organized classroom that will help them to model real life situations in the classroom and make instructions closer to the real world. Students are learning the importance of organization as a professional that they will need to apply to their future careers as well. As they learn how to work in the classroom, teams and develop basic organizational skills in my classroom, they will be able to apply those skills to their professional career.

Question 4: In what ways do your goals and beliefs and the reality of the modern classroom environment conflict with each other?

Many of my goals may be hard to address as students are required to complete more lessons individually using technology. It is hard to control developed lessons online that might not be able to relate back to all previous knowledge as well as give immediate positive feedback. In such a way, the risk of cheating and low performance arises. Nevertheless, the progress of technology can help to tackle these issues successfully.

Statements of Philosophy on Classroom Management

I believe the classroom management is a challenging but important element of education. The effective classroom management begins with the positive interaction between students and educators. I believe that interpersonal relations and mutual understanding between students and educators are the keys to successful learning (Doll, 2001). In this regard, I would prioritize the development of positive interaction with students through better understanding of my students. If I know my students and their background well, I can develop the personalized approach to each student. The personalized approach will help me to maintain positive relations with each student that decreases the risk of conflicts within the classroom.

I would also focus on maintaining the interest of students and keep their motivation high through providing them with the positive feedback for their progress. At the same time, as I know each of my students well, I can assess the progress of each student individually (Hulsart & McCarthy, 2009). For example, some students can make a greater progress, even if their academic performance remains low compared to other students, if at the beginning of their learning they had a much lower academic level. On the contrary, students, who seem to perform well judging by their credits, may make little progress, if initially their performance was good. In such a situation, I will be able to assess and provide with positive feedback each students respectively to their personal progress in the course of learning, whereas educators, who do not know their students’ background and development, may fail to provide  positively students, who underperform compared to other students but make a considerable progress in their academic development.

At the same time, the maintenance of the discipline in the classroom is also a very important part of my philosophy on classroom management (Finder, 2004). In this regard, I would focus on the positive motivation of students rather than on using punishment to maintain discipline within the classroom. The positive motivation is very useful because it increases the interest of students to learning and help them to stay focused on learning and enjoy the process of learning rather than dislike it in case of the punitive approach to their motivation.

Furthermore, classroom management includes the organization of students’ learning process and interaction that means that students should also develop organizational skills (Hooks, 2013). In this regard, one of my major tasks as educators is to teach students how to work in teams and develop their organizational skills (Doll, 2011). To meet this goal, I can use widely team work during lessons that will help students to develop basic organizational skills. I will serve as a guide for them to help them to organize their team work and individual work of each student. As a result, steadily they will develop organizational skills and will learn how to work in teams effectively.

In addition, each student naturally expect some reward in the course of education that means that I should motivate each student providing positive feedback and helping them to evaluate their own progress adequately. Even if some students have problems, I should help them to stumble through those problems and regain their positive academic performance. The motivation and rewards are closely intertwined and they are not necessarily related to some material rewards or results, such as A grades, for example. Instead, students should be aware of the fact that their personal progress is more important than their grades, which may change in the course of time. In such a situation, a positive feedback or a piece of advice from my part may be a stronger motivator for some students than a positive grade. This is why positive interpersonal relations and understanding of each student in the classroom are crucial for the effective and successful classroom management.
