Plagiarism & Academic Honesty Essay

Plagiarism is a serious challenge for the contemporary education system because the wide access to information and the huge flow of information raises the problem of the accurate identification of authentic works and prevention cases of plagiarism. The problem of plagiarism involves the use of one’s ideas without one’s consent and the presentation of those ideas as one’s own without reference to the person, who originally expressed those ideas. In such a way, plagiarism is simple misuse of one’s ideas by students or other stakeholders and presenting them as their own rather than as ideas of the specific author and his/her work, where they took the ideas from.

The problem of plagiarism is closely intertwined with the problem of academic honesty or, to put it more precisely, dishonesty. Plagiarism is the ultimate manifestation of academic dishonesty because the concept of academic honesty implies that students comply with academic principles that include the principle of the fair use of resources and information obtained from those resources. This means that educational institutions and educators expect students to learn from others, instead of mere borrowing ideas and findings of other students or researchers and presenting those ideas and findings as their own. Students should be able to reference and cite resources and authors they use in their academic works properly to avoid cases of plagiarism. They have to learn how to learn from others rather than how to thoughtlessly copy and paste ideas and works of other students or researchers to gain high grades. Such practices are unacceptable and contradict to the principle of academic honesty. This is why educational institutions struggle against such practices and attempt to eliminate them by undertaking the strictest measure in regard to students, who slip to plagiarism, to the extent that such students can just drop of their school.
