Police Body Cameras

The development of the contemporary police confronts the problem of the growing criticism because of the low effectiveness of the police, numerous cases of police brutality, corruption, the violation of law by police officers and many other issues. In response to the growing criticism, the police consider the possibility of the introduction of police body cameras that will be installed on the body of police officers and record what is going on around the police officer and what the police officer talks and hear. The introduction of police body cameras aims at the improvement of the police performance and decrease of the high criticism of the work of police officers at the moment. Therefore, police body cameras should be introduced because they will help to increase the effectiveness of the police, decrease the risk of the police brutality and make police more accountable than the police are now.

The major benefit of the introduction of police body cameras is the enhancement of the responsibility of police officers with wider opportunities to monitor and control their performance. Police officers become more responsible because they become aware that all their actions are recorded by their body cameras (Rahman 5). This is why illegal actions from the part of police officers become virtually impossible. At any rate, police officers may not commit illegal acts or slip to brutal acts in relation to civilians or offenders without reason and legal ground, unless they are ready to confront legal consequences of their actions. In such a way, the probability of police brutality becomes consistently lower because they can confront the legal prosecution and lose their job.

Furthermore, the police as well as the public can enhance the monitoring and control over police officers if they use body cameras. For example, supervisors can monitor and control the work of police officers and undertake any disciplinary actions against police officers, who breach rules or violate the law.  In such a way, supervisors will be able to monitor the performance of every police officer. Such monitoring will show how well each police officer performs and managers can take decisions concerning their promotion on the ground of their records, including video records, or alternatively they may fire those police officers, who underperform or hose behavior is questionable from the ethical point of view. Police officers will therefore be stimulated to work better and become responsible for every action they perform and every decision they take. Supervisors can also evaluate ethical issues that emerge in the course of the work of police officers and affect their performance consistently. For example, if some police officers act unethically, this is a reason for supervisors to consider ways to influence the behavior of such officers because the violation of ethical norms is the first sign that police officers may violate legal rules as well.

At the same time, police video cameras are beneficial for the public because they secure the public from the police brutality or any sort of illegal actions and they increase opportunities for the public to keep an eye on the work of all police officers. Cases of police brutality in relation to civilians will drop because such cases will be recorded and police officers will bear the full legal liability for their wrong actions. In fact, they are likely to face the criminal prosecution, especially if their brutality has caused serious harm or injuries to civilians. The public may keep the eye on the work of police officers all the time and develop effective strategies to restrict illegal actions of police officers.

The public gets larger opportunities to monitor and control the work of every police officer. They will be under the public control because, in case of any complaints from the part of the public, video records may be processed and used as evidence of any misconduct from the part of a police officer (Stanley 8). Using video records as evidence will facilitate any legal action against police officers because now civilians often confront the problem of the corporate protection of police officers, when police officers neglect their duty to investigate crimes committed by their colleagues. Many researchers (Levinson-Waldman 6) insist that police officers tend to protect their colleagues in case of investigation of crimes involving police officers. Police body cameras can help to address this issue and investigate crimes committed by police officers more effectively and easier. Therefore, police may face the steady destruction of traditional stereotypes and cultural barriers that contributed to the formation of the specific corporate culture, where police officers juxtaposed to the public and stand for interests of police officers.

In addition, police body cameras increase the mutual responsibility of police officers and civilians and improve their behavior (Gambacorta & Difilippo 2). Police officers and civilians develop positive behavioral patterns because they are conscious of the fact that body cameras record actions of all stakeholders involved in the police-civilian interaction. Therefore, if either party misconducts, the records from the police body camera will show it. In a long-run perspective, police body cameras can contribute to the improvement of relations between the public and police. In such a way, the police will regain the confidence of the public. Today, the police suffers from the lack of confidence because the public mistrusts police officers because of numerous and notorious cases of the police brutality that occur in different parts of the US. The transparency brought into the work of police officers will help the police to regain the confidence and trust of the public because civilians will see how police officers perform and how they act in different circumstances. The improvement of police-public interaction will have a positive impact on the law enforcement in the US, public safety and the general situation within the US society, because such improvement can ease the tension between the police and the public.

Therefore, the introduction of police body cameras is essential and will bring positive effects. The use of police body cameras can bring numerous benefits and enhance consistently the police responsibility and accountability in relation to the public and stimulates the positive behavior of civilians.  The introduction of police video cameras will contribute to the consistent change in the police-public interaction. One of the major advantages of police body cameras is the enhancement of the monitoring and control over the work of police officers. The enhancement of monitoring and control will keep police officers responsible. In case of any violation of existing regulations and laws, police officers will simply lose their job or face criminal liability for their actions. This is why police body cameras are worth introducing nationwide because they are effective tools that can help to decrease the risk of police brutality and other problems through stricter control over the regular work of every police officers in the US.
