Mishara and Martin have studied the efficiency of established methods and strategies in suicide prevention for police officers in Montreal. They claim that the variety of aspects that push people to commit suicide has been successfully identified. All the employees of all layers are involved in the program. This helped to decrease the suicide rates existing in the area. However, they claim that certain factors must also be taken into consideration as suicidal cases still take place.

Violanti, Maccanlies, Owens, Fekedulegn, and Andrew (2018) have discussed the acute course of the police officers killed themselves. They state that such accidents have become more often. The need for preventative methods and strategies has become a sharp one. “Stressors related to suicide among police included lack of organizational support, traumatic events, shift work, the stigma associated with asking for help, or problems associated with fitting in with the police culture” (Violanti et al., 2018). Thus, they provide a detailed overview and analyses of existing strategies and protocols that aim to prevent suicides amongst police and military officers.

Violanti, Gu, Charles and Fekedulegn published their article Is suicide higher among separated/retired police officers? An epidemiological investigation in 2011. For their research, they compared suicide rates between working and retired police officers. They have found out that “Adjusted for age and years of service, suicide rates were 8.4 (95% CI = 3.8-18.7) times higher in working officers vs. separated/retired officers (110.5 vs. 13.1 per 100,000 person-years respectively)” (Violanti, 2011). Moreover, the most critical years are the last 5 years prior to retirement. Such results point out the necessity of new suicide prevention policies development and implementation.
