American Politics ; “All the President’s Men” Moview Review

The meaning of politics and the role of the political leaders could hardly be underestimated for each individual of any country, as well as for the whole society and distribution of world powers. At the same time it is next to impossible to imagine our modern life without application of technical advantages. No wonder, that development of technological process is related to politics, or better to say is used by political leaders for various purposes, which results in serious impact of digital media upon different areas of politics; consequently new generations of people in America are also under the influence of digital media and are able to form their political views sometimes purely in the frames, provided by them.

Elections are vitally important for any political force and for the outcomes for the society and certainly exactly during elections digital media plays various roles, contributing to success of one candidate and failure of other. All the President’s Men is one of the political movies, directed by Alan J. Pakula, which was based on the non-fiction book, telling the story of two journalists, involved into the Watergate scandal events. The main aim of the movie was certainly to reveal to usual people the corruption, which was practiced in the White House during the time, when President Nixon’s administration had the power. Most critics agree that this movie is a profound investigation of the abuse of political power for the sake of overcoming of their competition and strengthening of their position by famous political representatives. One of the brightest examples was the use of CRP funds for political malfeasance. The money was paid to defense attorneys of those five men, from whom the whole story actually started for the viewers. The Canuck letter was another significant example of the tactic, applied by the Nixon administration. This letter was used with the aim to tell about racists remarks of Edward Muskie, which in reality were not made by him, towards French-Canadian people. Although this letter was a fiction, just a kind of special trick, it did play its role perfectly. There were a lot of rumors, telling that there were people from Nixon’s administration, who were directly related to that letter.

One of the central themes, explored by the movie, is without any doubts the ability of the media to have impact upon shaping of political views and promotion of political forces. On the one hand this story is about two reporters, who play the roles of detectives, finding out new facts and important information, which contributes to revealing of the terrible faults in the system of government in their own country. One the other hand the movie helps to realize, that this is not the only task of reporters and media in general – to inform people the truth, rather one of its main functions is to entertain and to influence. In other words, the situations, when people, having he political power, applied media for their own advantages and benefits, are absolutely not rare for the states, where the level of democratic freedom is low.

Overall, All the President’s Men is a unique story about the relations between politics and media, about possible outcomes of misuse of media, as nothing can remain hidden forever, there is only at least the slightest chance that the true facts would be revealed and this would result in absolutely opposite outcomes, than it was planned initially. Thus this movie is able to contribute to understanding of some historical events, as well as serve a kind of universal story to be considered for making the correct choices for young people, for future politics and governors of the country.
