Discussion of Age-related Changes

Provide a concrete example for each of the following: age-related changes, midlife transition, ageism, and life review

Age-related changes occur to all individuals and depend on their age since, as an individual grows older, he/she undergoes changes determined by natural physiological factors as well as common psychological trends. For example, as a rule, individuals experience the mid-life crisis at their late 30s – early 40s.

Midlife transition is the period in the life of individuals, when they realize that almost a half of their life has gone and they often try to re-evaluate their achievements and look ahead in face of the upcoming end of their life. The mid-life transition may involve a profound psychological crisis, for example, when individuals’ expectations do not match their actual accomplishments. As a result, they may suffer from depression, elevated anxiety level and other psychological issues.

Ageism is a form of discrimination grounded on the age of individuals. Ageism involves the discrimination of elderly people. For example, ageism may occur in the field of employment or education, when people cannot get employed or access education because of the under-estimation of their skills and abilities be employers or educators.

The life review normally occurs at the end of individuals, when they recall and re-consider the main points of their life, the main problems which have remained unresolved, and the most significant events in their life. As they review their life that has almost gone, they re-evaluate it and share their experience with others. For example, elderly people may tell their life story and its major events to their grand children, while reviewing their life. Alternatively, they may review their life on their own.
