Throughout the centuries, the topic about human development and inherited traits has become a hot issue of debate among researchers and psychological experts. Some studies show that nature (heredity) makes its powerful influence on the individual’s development and growth, behavior and attitudes, identity formation, interests and appreciations, while many researchers argue that human development and behavior is a result of nurture and the environment can make a significant impact on a person. Analyzing this long-lasting nature vs. nurture debate, of course, both inheritance and environmental factors make their impact on human development. Nature and nurture interact with each other and both of them play a part in the individual’s development, but I consider that nurture can make more powerful effect on the individual’s development, growth, and behaviors. An environment in which a person grows up always influences his or her development, personality traits, behaviors, personal values, appreciations, and attitudes to other people. Discipline, friendship, and education can make a significant impact on human development, behaviors, habits, self-esteem, and identity as a whole. Parents, family environment, and a child’s relationships with parents play a core role in influencing a person’s development and behavior. Studies showed that “the environment in which a child grows up in, particularly the influence and role of the parents shapes how a child will grow up and what sort of adult they will be… upbringing shapes a person’s personality. Provisions of education, lifestyle opportunities and friendship groups all determine… outlook” (Levitt 2013). Family values, household conditions, interactions with the community, economic factors, and school environment also affect the individual’s development, growth, the way a person thinks, behaves or interacts with others. As I said previously, both inheritance and environmental factors make their impact on human development but multiple evidence indicate that nurture makes more powerful effect on the individual’s development and behaviors.
