Racism In NBA Essay

The problem of racism in NBA raises the heat debate because, on the one hand, NBA players are predominantly African Americans, whereas owners of NBA franchises are whites. As a result, it seems to be quite natural that many people, including Josh Peter, believe there is a deep-rooted racism in NBA, but such a view on NBA is superficial and does not mirror the actual situation in the association.

In fact, the dominance of white owners of NBA sport franchises is not the manifestation of racism but, instead, it is rather the manifestation of the socioeconomic inequality between whites and African Americans. In this regard, racism refers rather to the persisting socioeconomic inequality rather than to intentional policies conducted by NBA sport franchises or their owners. African Americans just cannot afford buying and maintaining sport franchises in NBA because they do not have such capitals to invest into a sport franchise. Instead, white owners are just a few of many representatives of the upper-class, which is still predominantly white because of the economically superior position of whites, which shaped historically through the systematic oppression of the poor, especially African Americans, who comprised the core of the American poor.

On the other hand, the case of the manifestation of racism by an owner of NBA franchise does refer to the personal views and beliefs of the owner rather than to NBA itself. At this point, the author should distinguish the personal position of the owner of an NBA sport franchise and the policy conducted by NBA. Instead, the author just mixed them up and accused NBA of racism. However, such a view seems to be erroneous.
