Reflections On The Article “Principals Who Think Like Teachers”

Principals Who Think Like Teachers by Kevin Fahey is a reflective article which proves to be useful and actual today. Fahey investigates the role of a principle in the learning process and his/her ways to succeed. He states, and I absolutely agree with him in this point, that principal’s role is crucial and determinative in the successful collaboration between teachers and students and general school success, as a result. I also accept Fahey’s point that only thinking like teachers, realizing their methods and accepting them as personalities with their view on learning, the principle may help them and improve the learning process.

I cannot deny Fahey’s opinion that despite the fact that teaching students is challenging,  “teaching” teachers and encouraging them for development is absolutely another, more complicated task. Teachers do not always accept the necessity to change something in their teaching practice.  They usually appear to be rather conservative in this question and may even be offended by principal’s desire to change something in their methods. So, principal should be very careful and wise introducing or changing something. Fahey names four main qualities which the principle should have: courage for innovations, clear understanding of themselves as learners, real eagerness for learning and purpose. I also think that these qualities are determinative for the successful principle.

Fahey marks two types of learning: instrumental learning which presumes accurate methods and steps for teachers to be implemented and socializing learning which presumes reflection about teacher’s role and his/her effectiveness, close collaboration in a team and other thoughts considering the learning process. Further Fahey states that the principle should definitely know what type of learning is appropriate for the particular school and teachers and implement it. However, I do not agree with this point. I think that these both types should be implemented because just practical methods (instrumental learning) without global understanding of teacher’s role, mission and responsibility can not be successful, as well as theoretical concept without excellent practice serves for nothing.

This article seems very useful for me personally: it allows  me to structuralize all information about principal’s role in the learning process and use this knowledge in practice. Thanks to Fahey’s article I clearly realize that a good principal is the person who is a learner himself and the best point considering this issue is: learn and develop yourself all the time if you want to succeed.
