Book Of Genesis (1-3)

  1. And there was day, and there was night, and Holy Spirit was flying over the lands and oceans. God looked down to the Earth and  realized it was beautiful, but soon He became sad because it was empty.  And there was day, and there was night, and God was walking on the ground and on the water, but did not meet anybody  on his way and his eyes did not find anything to bring a smile on the face of Him and God’s sight was full of sadness.
  2. And time passed and God used his great mighty and power created trees, and flowers, and bushes on the Earth. And his Word made them grow, blossom and bring beautiful fruit, to signify glory and power of God. Beautiful and evergreen trees never got ill and never died.
  3. Adam, the first of all people, and Even, a wife of him, were created by God to signify his glory. They lived in the beautiful Garden of Eden, created by God. Once, when they were walking carelessly in the garden, the Lord appeared before them. “My son and my daughter”, he uttered. “You spend your days playing and entertaining yourself. You live easy and careless life and enjoy all possible merits of life. Look at all those beautiful landscapes, mountains, sky and trees that surround you. Everything here was created by Me, and you can enjoy these all. I want you to learn how to take care and be merciful. I want you to show respect and appreciation to the world you live in.
  4. And now listen to my command. From now on, trees, bushes and grass need your care. You must water them, take their fruit and protect them from insects. You will become like gods for them, and same like gods you now need to take care. You, Adam, and the wife of yours, Even, from now on will take care of these beautiful trees, bushes and flowers in these garden of Eden”.  After these words  God  left the garden of Eden.
  5. Adam, the son of God, and Eva, Adam’s wife became greatly surprised by the God’s command. They got used to careless life and did not except it might have changed. They quickly forgot the command given by God and came back to their games and happy time.
  6. A day passed, and then another one, and nothing had changed. But one day Adam, the son of God, and Eva, his wife, forgot about new command, uttered by God.
  7. On the ten’s day of the third month Adam was walking in the garden and wanted to find a beautiful place in the grass to lay down on the shadow of the huge green oak. When he looked down, he found no green grass. All grass was yellow and dry. Then he directed his eyes toward trees and became greatly surprised at these trees also had yellow and dry leaves. Adam ran quickly to find a wife of him, Eva, and finally found her crying near the apple trees.
  8. “Beloved son of God, my husband Adam”, she said. “Today I was looking for some fresh fruit to eat and found none. There are no fruits on the trees and all trees are yellow and dry. What have happened to us, my beloved husband?” Disappointed and scared, they remembered the command of God, to take care of brushes, leaves and trees.  Scared they lifted their eyes to the sky and started pleading God for help.   Finally, the Lord appeared in the sky, surrounded by shining.  “What did you want from , children of mine?” he asked.
  9. Adam and Eve said nothing and pointed to trees, dry and yellow. “I told you to take care of things that surrounded you” was His answer. Remember to take care of trees, and grass, and bushes in the garden, as it was told to you earlier” “Thank you, Father!” – Adam and Even said in tears. “Now we will care of everything we love ”.

My pastiche is from the 1-3 parts of Genesis.  I tried to copy form and structure presented in this outstanding religious text.

The authorship of the Bible is not determined, but it is recognized as   sacred book give by God to people. It contains  basic assumptions of Christianity, moral and ethical regulations and ideas.  Genesis, is the book of Hebrew Bible. Creation of the world and different events which took place afterwards are the main themes of Genesis. The book presents explanations about the origin of the world, and also origin of different events and things which exist in the in it.  According to the tradition, Moses is called the author of the Book of Genesis,  but there is not documentary evidence of his authorship. The language of the  Book of Genesis reflects the time it was created and also its purpose. The language contains a lot of old words, phrases and sentence structures. Sacramental and ceremonial tone is another distinguishing feature of Genesis. This can be explained by the purpose of writing. Genesis explains basic concepts of Hebrew and later Christian religion to religious followers.  Contemporary scholars agree that Genesis, same like other  four books of the Pentateuch,  derive from four sources and it was were combined   by unknowns authors. Basically, different sources tell the same story with minor differences and in many cases this is regarded as a proof of trustworthiness of the Bible.  At the present moment, most scientist believe that the Bible is the collection of stories from different sources, gathered and edited and composed in one book.

In my pastiche I made an attempt to follow form and structure of Genesis. Ontological question became the essence of the pastiche.  This short piece of writing explains the origin of plants and their function on the planet. Explanation are given from religious perspective. Later the story is followed by the moral lesson, where God teaches first people of the Earth, Adam and Eva, to take care about things which surround them. Themes of creation and  learning different moral lessons are typical themes of Genesis. The form also follows the one used in Genesis. Repetitions and paraphrases of the same information are also peculiar to the Bible and Genesis. Ceremonial tone creates necessary atmosphere and underlines the significance of the things, described in the writing.  All appearances of God are described like outstanding events and underline His majesty and great power. Different deeds of God  are used as ontological explanations of different events.  The theme of creation, explored and investigated in the pastiche, gives explanation to the origin of one element – plants, but it follows basic Biblical structure. It shows the origin of the element and the way God has created it.  Pastiche follows the theme of first eleven chapters of Genesis and tells a piece of story about the creation of the world.

Same as all Biblical texts, pastiche is divided to small numbered passages, one of each contains a small basic idea. Repetitions, old names and  changed word structure follows literary form of Genesis. Such phrases like “Adam, the son of the Lord” or “Eva, the wife of Adam” are typical descriptions used in Biblical texts.  Repetitions, which often appear in Genesis are also presented in pastiche.  “And there was day, and there was night” copy repetitions used in Genesis.

The piece, presented in the pastiche, might be regarded as a supplementation to the information given in Genesis. It explains the emergence of tress and illustrates relations between first people and their surroundings and contains moral lessons.
