Differences Between Biblical Theology & Contemporary Theology Brief Essay

1 Introduction

Religion gives a rise to the study of theology, the discipline of Christian religious knowledge on God, man, world. Christianity viewed as one of the world’s major religions that gave rise to different theological approaches among which it is possible to single out Biblical theology and Contemporary theology.

2 Biblical theology

Biblical theology seeks to discover what the biblical writers, under divine guidance, believed, described, and taught in the context of their own times. (Elwell, 1998). These discoveries consisted in stressing the Bible’s key integrating themes: covenant, the exodus, the kingdom of God, promise and fulfillment, God’s glory, reconciliation, and many others.

All these researchers describe the progressive and historical dimension of the Bible’s theology, centering on its historical rise and progression.

Biblical theology helps to study the doctrines of the Bible, arranged according to their chronology and historical background, showing the unfolding of God’s revelation as it progressed through history.

3 Contemporary theology

Contemporary theology involves the study of the development of beliefs in recent history, focusing on ethnic areas (Smith, 2001). The great attention is paid to similarities and differences that compare historic Christianity with other faiths. This approach evaluates faith in the context of various social movements and helps to understand the teaching of God’s Word in the Bible.

In this regard, Bible turns out to be a historical book that explains the eternal truth of God and investigates the development of Christian faith and beliefs.

Contemporary theology is helpful in the study of God’s relationship to the world, including philosophy, history and culture.

4 Conclusion

Thus, both Biblical and Contemporary theology examine the origins and history of each movement, illuminate major figures, document doctrinal emphases, and evaluate central teachings in light of biblical Christianity.

Regardless of different approaches, the Bible itself does not change as it is the standard of truth for the believer, both now and forever.
