Discussion of “The Word of God in Psalm 119”

Today I listened to a speech about the word of God in Psalm 119 by Dr. Seong Hyun Park, who gave three reasons why he thinks we would want to study Psalm 119. First, it is an “intriguing chapter in the bible” (The word of God in Psalm119 n/p). Secondly, it is an important chapter using “distinct terms to refer to the word of God” (The word of God in Psalm119 n/p) and thirdly because Martin Luther said he learned how to study the word of God through this chapter of the bible. The impact of the Old Testament in the lives of the reader can be understood by studying Psalm 119. In this chapter, eight key terms were used to describe the word of God. Something that was previously done in another chapter, Psalm 19 in which five key terms were used. ‘Torah’ meaning law serves as the basis that makes up the book of Psalms up until chapter 119, although four other terms were encountered in chapter 19. It was purported that Psalm119 was written as an acrostic because it is related to seven other acrostic Psalms found in the book of Psalms (The word of God in Psalm 119 n/p). Placed side by side with the seven other Psalms as a single text, they match in virtually everything which probably indicates the reasons why the eight key terms are used to describe the word of God. Those were used in Psalm 119 because it serves as the eight Psalm of the other acrostic Psalms, making number eight a significant number in the book of Psalms. It was suggested according to research that Psalm119 would have been written when the word of God was made available to people in written form capturing the thoughts and conditions of the particular time (The word of God in Psalm119 n/p).

It was observed that the word of God which is normally received via the ears was not so in Psalm 119. Instead, it was received by sight, an example of which was “Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying when wilt thou comfort me?” (Authorized King James Version Psalm119.82). Psalm 119 in its entirety shows how much of a good is related to the Psalmist because he knows the word of God, follows, lives by it and is in communion with God. Such communication is conducted by asking for more understanding of the word, and all these were available to him because the word of God was in written form (The word of God in Psalm119 n/p).

Listening to this talk, I gained the understanding of the word of God in Psalm 119. My eyes opened to things I did not know it contained. Moreover, I would like to gain the insight and understanding of the Psalmist as well as the knowledge of the old testament.
