Dogmatic Theology & Historical Theology Reflection Paper

Introduction

The development of religion contributed to the rise of theology, the science studying god and divine laws as well as relevant issues. Christianity gave rise to different theological approaches among which it is possible to single out Dogmatic and Historical theology.

Dogmatic theology

Dogmatic theology is grounded on a set of beliefs and concepts affirmed by a church body and considered to be right (Finlayson, 2012). These beliefs involve key ideas of the most outstanding figures, who contributed to Christianity, such as Thomas Aquinas, for example.

The Bible mirrors key changes in Christianity based on key figures that shaped Christian teaching. Bible refers to Moses and Jesus as two key figures, who set key laws and principles and shaped the worldview of Christians.

Dogmatic theology helps to study the development of religion and religious views in the context of the emergence of new ideas generated by the major figures in the church and official position of the church body.

Historical theology

Historical theology involves the study of history and development of Christian doctrine (Finlayson, 2012). This approach is grounded on historical analysis of the development of Christianity.

In this regard, Bible turns out to be a historical book, which uncovers the history of Jewish people and rise of Christianity as the world religion. Biblical texts are valuable for historical theology as sources of historical facts and implications that help to understand the development of Christianity.

Historical theology is helpful in the study of the historical development of religion and key stages in the development of Christianity.

Conclusion

Thus, both Dogmatic and Historical theology offer their explanation of Christianity and its development. Dogmatic theology offers the official position of the church body, while Historical theology offers the historical development of Christianity.
