Format and Types of Resumes and Their Purpose

 

There are four standard types of resume formats, including chronological, functional, mixed, and targeted. A chronological resume is aimed at providing information about a job seeker’s work experience, presented in reverse chronological order. This type of resume is one of the most common formats that allows employers to assess a job seeker’s skills, knowledge, and experience. A chronological resume format should be used by an individual with a solid work experience, which can be aligned with selected position (Hart, 2003). A functional resume is aimed at providing accurate information about a job seeker’s skills and knowledge in some particulate area. It is necessary to include description of the job duties and responsibilities assigned to the position which was occupied by an individual when he was employed by previous companies. This type of resume should be used by a job seeker who needs to describe the type of work he/she has done in the past, placing no emphasis on the years of experience (Gupta & Ganguly, 2018).A mixed resume is aimed at combining the elements of both a chronological and functional resumes in order to provide a more detained description of previously occupied job positions. This type of resume format requires inserting the job history section to list all jobs with their titles, as well as the location section and the date of employment section. This format should be used by a job seeker who needs to demonstrate his/her skills, knowledge, and experience, placing emphasis on personality type (Hart, 2003).  A targeted resume format is aimed at addressing the prospective job a job seeker is applying to. This type of resume format should include a job seeker’s goals and objectives, qualifications, and education to demonstrate that they are consistent with the job requirements listed by prospective employers. As a rule, a targeted resume format is used by a job seeker who needs to show his/her achievements related to the job requirements (Hart, 2003).

Actually, based on the above mentioned definitions, the two types of resume formats that would best fit me as I apply for jobs include a chronological resume and a targeted resume. My choice of these two resume formats depends on the description of prospective job positions and the requirements of prospective employers, as well as on my own goals and objectives in professional career. I need to choose a chronological resume format to persuade employers of my skills, knowledge, and experience, focusing their attention my solid work history. Also, I need to provide a targeted resume to direct necessary information about my qualifications and experiences to my perspective employer.

As a matter of fact, one of Saint Leo University Core Values is Respect. This value plays a critical role in professional and personal development of an individual (Saint Leo University, 2019). If a student works hard, he/she demonstrates respect in education, task completion, and knowledge sharing, creating socially responsible environment. This value is of great importance to a job seeker because employers are interested in hiring the best candidates who can not only apply their unique skills to achieve positive outcomes in performance, but also who can foster their commitment to the unity and diversity of people through high level of respect. Professional dedication is linked to respect because a job seeker’s attitudes toward work reflect his/her professional experience, which stands for excellence of skills and harmonious relationships (Luecking et al., 2004). Any job seeker should be aware of the fact that the ability to show respect affects the overall professionalism of an individual in the selected field of occupation. It is difficult to achieve success in professional career without making a great effort (Peters, 2018). Hence, Respect as one of Saint Leo University Core Values should become a key priority for a job seeker.
