Important Role Of Non-Administrator Positions In School Environment Essay

The list of ideal non-administrator leadership positions that can be occupied by school staff and teachers within a school setting includes resource provider, instructional specialist, curriculum specialist, classroom supporter, mentor, data coach, and learning facilitator (Ozdemir & Kilinc, 2014). Some of these positions are instructional, while others are non-instructional leadership positions. The identified leadership positions provide support of the school’s vision and mission, as well as demonstrate the proper dispositions, and maintain a positive school culture because teachers and other stakeholders apply the proper leadership skills, knowledge and experience that aligns with the key organizational goals. The attributes of two of the non-administrator positions listed above vary because of the different responsibilities assigned to school staff members and teachers performing the tasks of learning facilitators and curriculum specialists. Both learning facilitators and curriculum specialists should demonstrate the following leadership attributes: high level of responsibility, effective communication skills, decision making skills, honesty, integrity, self-control, cooperation and self-confidence. However, learning facilitators differ from curriculum specialists because they have to apply the proper skills to facilitate professional learning opportunities: solidarity, inventiveness and creativity. Curriculum specialists should be well-prepared to understand and maintain the established content standards; therefore, they should be open-minded, convincing and straightforward. According to researchers, “schools need to encourage all members to assume leadership roles and to build an understanding of leadership which focuses primarily on improving classroom instruction”( Ozdemir & Kilinc, 2014, p. 257). Undoubtedly, each of the leadership positions should promote the improvement of student achievement and participation. Curriculum specialists help teachers to comply with the established standards, strictly following school curriculum and providing shared assessments, while learning facilitators help teachers to learn from one another through observation, teamwork and other methods, contributing to organizational improvements and enhanced academic outcomes of students. Hence, both positions are non-administrator leadership positions which play an important role in building a more democratic school environment.
