Observing Gregor Mendel’s experiments on heredity in garden peas, it is possible to mention that the success of Mendel is explained by careful planning and execution of experiments, as well as the existence of a large number of experiments that allowed obtaining statistically reliable information. As a result of numerous experiments, Mendel clearly established that in the second generation the ratio of plants with dominant and recessive traits is 3:1. Three parts are plants with yellow seeds and one with green. In subsequent generations, in some plants with yellow seeds, splitting is again observed in the same ratio, while in others only yellow seeds are formed. Plants with a recessive trait are green and have wrinkled seeds, while yellow color of immature beans do not split in subsequent generations, all the offsprings are homogeneous (Griffiths, Miller, Suzuki, et al, 2000). Thus, Mendel continued to study the behavior of the trait for seven generations, and also repeated experiments for many times. In all cases, the results were the same. On the basis of this, the scientist formulated the basic laws of inheritance of characters. This is primarily the rule of uniformity of hybrids of the first generation, or the law of domination, and the rule (law) of splitting in the second generation.
To conclude, Mendel has created the scientific principles for describing
and researching hybrids and their offspring, as well as has developed and
applied an algebraic system of symbols and notation signs, which was an
important conceptual innovation. Moreover, Mendel has also formulated two basic
principles of inheritance of attributes in a series of generations, allowing to
make predictions, and taught us the ways the genetic traits can “skip” a
generation.
